Check to see what velocity values are showing up in the MIDI Monitor. If they are coming in too low, you might need to make some adjustments on your MIDI controllers.

Also check the mixer in SD3. Check that the output routing is going where you need it to go. Perhaps you may only be monitoring the ambiance channels and not actually hearing the direct mics. Solo some of the outputs to see if things change. If you are sending a midi velocity of 127 and not hearing a full hit, something is wrong. An easy check would be to click on a drum to trigger it, it should be pretty loud.

I would love a to see a global control over midi input sensitivity. I have some controllers that are set for other applications (BFD, Slate) and each seem to respond differently to incoming midi. Also, this would be a quick fix for people who play at different velocity levels (hard hitters vs soft).

Sensitivity is more of a controller aspect than individual software. It should be adjusted to how you play, as that would require less adjustment on the software side (minor tweaking of the velocity curves).

Velocities from my Maschine controller as opposed to my Oxygen keyboard can vary considerably. I would rather adjust them to get consistent results from my software instruments, than adjusting ten+ software instruments for two controllers.

My kit consists of a Trapkat, 2 Drumkats & 4 pedals. I have them set to comfortably trigger BFD3 (since I owned it before SD3). Using the same patches on the controllers I notice that SD3 plays a little light. By that I mean, sending the same midi velocity to both VIs, BFD3 plays hotter than SD3 (not just volume, which I could control with master volume) but the overall ‘feel’ of the kit. It sounds as though I’m playing SD3 lighter than BFD3. It’s a little hard to explain but it’s as though I’m playing BFD with big rock sticks and SD3 with skinny jazz sticks. The ‘sweet spot’ seems lower in SD3. I could, and have adjusted the velocity curves individually on SD3 but since my kit consists of 48 pads, that is a lot of adjusting. I have the velocity curves on BFD3 & SD3 set to linear and if I had a global curve adjustment on either program I could deal with the discrepancy between the two programs. Perhaps a “copy and paste” tool for velocity curves might make it easier.

SD3 has a great dynamic range. What I do notice is that the output is quieter than sd2. I found just turning up the main volume (bottom right) made a huge difference.

SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

Perhaps a “copy and paste” tool for velocity curves might make it easier.

You can save your velocity curves as user presets and recall them. It’s in the drop down on the velocity curve panel.

SD3 has far greater headroom than BFD. That was one of my main beefs with BFD.

Thanks to everyone that replied.  A little tweaking was all that was needed.  I’m new to SD, (former Battery User) so I thought the volumes would requre a little less playing.

    Cheers

For those with a roland module, there’s a hidden setting in all the newer Roland Modules like Td-25, TD-25, TD-30 and TD-50, it’s called the USB/Audio input gain and it’s by default set to -12dB which causes SD3 to be barely audible when triggered with the module, maybe search for a setting like that in your midi controller?

If I have a couple of tracks, say one with SD3 and another with MIDI Piano or synth in my DAW, SD3 has way way lower output than the keyboard if i just play my keyboard or playing some of the grooves.

I have to use the Limiter Pedal effect on the outputs to be able to even hear SD3.

That sounds more like a case of everything else being too loud.

    Actually no !

On the master meters output in Studio One everything else like soft synths and audio tracks shows normal output levels !

if I want SD3 to be on the same level without boosting it in Studio One the only way is to use the Limiter Pedal effect in SD3 on the SD3 outputs.

I just checked and found out that if i don’t use the Limiter Pedal effect in SD3 I have to boost the SD3 input channel sensitivity in Studio One to +24dB to be able to hear it at a similar level as the rest of the tracks (MIDI and Audio Tracks) ???

Am I missing something obvious here ???

Well, it sounds like something is set up very wrong, so I suggest you ZIP your Studio One Project (without Audio files) and attach to a post here so we may have a look.

Hi, Piraino. I have the same problem whereby my Yamaha PSR-950, when used as my MIDI trigger, is noticeably softer than the Superior Drummer app itself. What “tweaking” did you do to fix the issue for you, please?
