Hey guys
I’ve been using Superior Drummer for quite some time and am on the current version. Recently I’ve changed my studio setup and am letting go of my Roland V-Drums.
This means that for Superior, I’ll be going back to playing drum parts using a MIDI keyboard.
One thing I loved about using the V-Drums kit with Superior was the natural response of the hi-hat. It was easy to make each hi-hat strike sound a little different by subtly opening or closing the hi-hat.
Of course, MIDI drumming (using GM layout) is limited to F# for the closed hi-hat and A# for the open hat. So every closed hat is fully closed.
I’m wondering if there’s any way to configure Superior to use, for example, a controller pedal plugged into my keyboard, to allow a range of open to closed hi-hat variations, similar to using the hi-hat pedal on the V-Drums kit?
Or are there other ways to solve this particular challenge?
Really keen to hear from any Superior Drummer users who have found a great way to do this via a MIDI keyboard.
Thanks guys!
Mike
Hi
I am really Surprised that you would sell your kit. There is no way to my knowledge of getting anywhere close to the same field out of the keyboard. I don’t care if it has velocity sensitivity or not.
The only thing I can think of for your high hat, would be to somehow remap your pitch bend wheel or the vibrato wheel to simulate the open or closed high-hat position. I really don’t think it will work or is doable.
there is a very old app called midi-ox that can be inserted into the midi data stream And monitor the actual midi signals coming from your keyboard or any device. Because it is so old it is not well documented and very user unfriendly. But I read all the midi messages coming from a desktop midi control surface So that I could manually program the mini messages into Wavelab.
I worked really hard on that and did not document enough.
Good luck with it and let us know.

Hi,
using the mod wheel works without doing any modifications to the Default MIDI Preset.
What to keep in mind is that it the scale is reversed to what you might normally be used to, e.g. opening a filter with the mod wheel is usually increasing as you turn up the wheel. When you turn the mod wheel up for the Hihat, you close it, so fully Open is CC#01 =’0′ and Closed Tight is CC#01 = ‘127’.
Also, you can’t use the GM articulations for this to work as expected. You need to use the Trigger notes, as when you use an E-drum kit and Preset.
In the Default Preset, you can use the following notes:
#18 = Edge Trigger
#19 = Tip Trigger
#9 = Bell Trigger
#10 = Closed Pedal

Hey Ken, we’ll contact you shortly by email to figure out what is happening on your phone when using dictation, I tried reproducing the issue but it seems to work with the phone I have access to right now.
