Hi I am using Pro tools 11 on a Mac and mixing a song by creating a stereo “Print Track” that I can manually mix to and then bounce.
I want to apply an ezmix2 mastering setting to my final track and had a question and some issues.
Question: Do I want to have the mastering applied while mixing or wait until I have the mixed track?
Here is the issue I am encountering.
All instruments are sent via a Print Bus to an auxiliary called Print Bus.
The Print Bus is sent to the “Print Track” (a stereo audio track) via a Print track bus.
When I apply the mastering insert to either the print bus auxiliary or the print track I get a distorted result.
What is the proper approach to adding ezmix2 mastering to either 1. my print track or 2. normally to the bounced file?
Thanks
Hi,
nowadays there is no “proper” approach, I would say.
If you would let someone else master, you traditionally make a Stereo mix file with enough headroom for the Mastering Engineer to have something to work with.
If you master yourself, you can have it inserted on your Aux track before printing. Having it on all the time while mixing would not be a good idea, I think but might be good in your absolutely final mixing stage.
Personally, I very seldom print to track like that in Pro Tools nowadays unless I want to do some specific authoring on the files like editing fades and spaces.
