You can just use only 1 hihat in SD3, what you can do is open another instance of SD3 and connect the TD-30 directly to the computer instead of the td-27, select both midi inputs in Sd3. You’ll need a powerful computer and 2 USB ports to do this of course. You will need to create your own MIDI map for the TD-30 but the VH-12 should work automatically.

    BlueMistral,

Thanks for the quick reply and that’s a very interesting (crafty) solution.

You can actually setup a second and completely independent hi-hat in a single instance of SD3 as an additional instrument.  I have done this successfully, although it took me some time to figure it out.  Where I really got hung up was finding enough available midi notes to support the numerous articulations for hi-hats, and then painstakingly assigning them.  I took some notes when I did this and I’ll dig them up.  Ultimately it was just too difficult to work the second hihat into every SDX I have so I abandoned it.

    Hey Pumpkinking,

I am in the process of wanting to add a second hi-hat into my setup using an eDRUMin 10 and SD3, so if you find the notes you made on this process or can remember any of the details, it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch!

Here is what I wrote down, as a guide for myself, about 2 years ago (apologies for brevity or lack of clarity – ask Qs if it is not clear):

Start with SD3 core default kit

Enable midi mapping per your kit (I have two modules with custom mapping)

Add Instrument – pick a hihat from the instrument list

Look at what articulations are enabled on stock hihat

    • Closed/tight/open(0-4) edge
    • Closed/tight/open(0-4) tip
    • Closed/open pedal
    • CC/Trigger (all)

Look at articulations for additional hihat, and start by enabling same set (if midi mapped)

Any articulations not midi mapped need to be added to the midi map (midi mapping panel

Look at midi map for closed/open pedal for def hit (21/23 or A-1/B-1 for me)

Look at the default midi assignment for open/closed pedal for second foot controller (10/103 or A#-2/G6 for me)

In drum brain or s/w config, change pedal open/close midi notes to match those in SD3 (98 – tip & 55 – edge)

Enable trigger midi notes in addl instrument midi map

Enable pedal CC control midi note (I used CC5)

In drum brain or s/w config change pedal CC output to CC5

    Hi Pumpkinking,

Thanks so much for the writeup. When I jump on the drum kit later today, I’ll go through the notes and see what I can come up with as well. Your assistance is very much appreciated.

    Happy Holidays!

I used these notes to get the second hi-hat working.

I’m using 2 Edrumins in hi-hat levels mode. for kit pieces, select hi-hats for both. then go into your SD3, add the hi-hat, and open the Edrum/Midi window to find some open midi assignments. Select the new instrument.  Cllick to the midi-mapping box if hidden, click the lines at the top and select add note, next to the boxes for the hihat edge and tip triggers.

Adding a few of my own notes to clarify things for those who are new to this (like me).

    1. The MIDI-In/E-Drums window (settings>”…”) IS NOT the same thing as the MIDI Mapping Box on the right side of the screen. This box is much more powerful than using the midi-in/e-drums window too because it’s destructive.
      1. The Midi-In/E-Drums window will not display notes that aren’t set up
      2. So even if you add an additional hi-hat, it will not display the tip, edge, and bow triggers until they are set up and showing in the side midi-box.
      3. Like Pumpkinking’s notes state: go to the midi-box to add the triggers there FIRST, then they’ll show up in the midi-in/edrum settings window

    Hey Visual Drummer,

Just want to say thanks a bunch for adding your notes to this process. Similar to what you have, about two months ago I decided to take the plunge and purchased a second eDrumin unit, so now my setup consists of two eDrumin 10s. With pumpkinking’s and your notes, I think I should be all set!

    Thanks again.
