Toontrack Activation Limits

I love Toontrack products, but I find their licensing system particularly limiting and even abusive for the consumer. Considering the amount of money you can spend on their products.

At this point in life, what less than being able to have 3 simultaneous activations? Right now they only allow 2 simultaneous activations, but they also have a limit of 4 (four!!!) activations per purchased product, so you can’t compensate for the limitations (2 activations) by deactivating and activating on PCs as you need, because you can only activate it 4 times before having to ask the Toontrack team to reset the count. And they’re not going to do it a lot of times and often.

Right now I have my Toontrack products activated on my personal PC (home studio) and my laptop (which I use to teach drum lessons and to play with my band). I would like to have a second laptop so I don’t have to use the same one at the academy and at the live shows, which would add up to 3 necessary activations. If I needed to activate everything I have from Toontrack on that 3rd PC right now, I would have to pay around €7,000 or €8,000 again to buy something I already have. Something I’m obviously not going to do, I already paid for them once and I feel entitled to use them when and where I need them.

If these limitations on the activations of purchased products (and which those of us who spend money on them suffer) served at least to avoid Jack Sparrow, it would be understandable, but we all know (including Toontrack) that it isn’t like that. I don’t know if it’s allowed to mention this on the forum, and I apologize if not, but damn, it’s the reality and it’s directly related to the subject.

Hopefully, Toontrack, in an unprecedented move of generosity, will finally give us the ability to have (at least) 3 simultaneous activations, and remove that ridiculous limitation of 4 activations per purchased product (and we won’t have to go around begging for them to reset them).

I’d love to see Toontrack go to iLok. End these proprietary licensing systems that serve to do nothing but hurt the end user. With iLok you can move it to whatever machine you’re using. Heck even VSL went iLok. You don’t even need a physical dongle – there’s iLok Cloud.

I don’t know if I would really like them to move to ilok. I quite like the way they manage licenses. As for me, if they were a little more generous with the number of simultaneous activations and removed that absurd limit of 4 activations per product, I would be more than happy.
