Hello all,
Im looking for a very clean ride cymbal sound. So many jazz recordings have this gorgeous clean stick tone, but here in virtual instrument world, seems like someone decided that jazz ride cymbals should all sound like trash can lids: Lots of trashy wash, the attack barely pings, it gets buried in the lower frequencies’ wash.
Hopefully someone knows of a drum tone/sample/plugin/eq approach that i could implement in Superior Drummer 3 for what Im describing?
So, im starting with trying to find a V-drum plugin that has a flat ride cymbal (or has similar tone). The tone is extremely clean: The majority of the tone IS the stick attack—bright, clear, each hit articulate. They have little to no wash, roar, sustain, etc between each stick strike. There is a high-end “shimmer”, for sustain, much sweeter than the roaring lows.
Background: A flat ride was (and is) used in jazz, came out in the mid-1970s (I think). A KILLER recorded example is Airto Moriera’s drumming on the Chick Corea album titled Return To Forever, released in the late 70s. It has blue colors and a seagull on the album cover. The lineup were jazz players, along with Chick, Airto, his wife Flora Purim, Stanley Clarke on acoustic bass, and Joe Farrell on woodwinds/reeds. Chick later took the name Return To Forever into hard fusion with his new band named Return To Forever, with different drummer and a guitar player. That latter band’s intense electric fusion is completely different sound than what im seeking here. (Although Lennie White’s toms on the RTF album Romantic Warrior are a high-water mark.)
Two other drummers of note that use flat rides are Paul Wertico, and Antonio Sanchez. Both played with Pat Metheny. Wertico played with 2 flat rides, Sanchez 1, his primary ride.
Thank you so much!
