Hey!
First I have been working through these forums learning about the software and I’m getting super excited to get going. Preface that i’m a total noob to this whole world.
I’m looking for my advice to avoid making any mistakes with setup and purchases.
My situation – I’m an acoustic drummer that has played in many local bands and i’m working with a guitar player who records all his songs in Garageband. The music is guitar based rock. He uses the crappy drum tracks that don’t fit the songs at all, but they do keep the beat. After listening to these songs for a couple years now, I came across EZD2 and was hit by all the possibilities to improve the drum tracks on these recordings. I also think it will be a fun and creative adventure to take on. My hope is that this will be a fun hobby that will progress and fill the void of not being able to play drums when I want to. I have young kids/a baby and my ability to bang away on my drums at will is limited.
So, my computer is a Mac with OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. I have EZD2 (it says I purchased version 2.02)and also purchased the Pocket Grooves midi pack (it was $10!), but I haven’t downloaded the software on my computer yet. I image that I will be purchasing more packs as things progress. Are there any packs that are highly recommended to add down the line?
Should I be using Garageband (as that’s what all these recordings are in)? Does this make the most sense? Should I be looking at other software longer term? I really don’t know anything at this point – so my main question is it smart move to go with Garageband? OR, can I import these songs to a better program than Garageband and still fix the drum tracks on these songs? Would I have more possibilities using another software in the future?
I’m also wondering if I should also look at purchasing either a finger drumming midi pad (Presonus Atom?) or a midi keyboard like the Akai MPK Mini. Is there any other hardware that i’m missing? Again, I think like a drummer so being able to finger out beats is appealing to me. I do have a cheaper Yamaha electronic kit – but i’m not wild about the feel/sounds.
I’m busy with work and life so I won’t be able to dig into EZD2 until just before the new year – but any advice to save time and avoid mistakes is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading!

This is a route that many Mac users take – start with Garageband. It has the basic functionality, such as recording audio, adding instrument plugins, and using effects. When you feel that you have “outgrown” Garageband you can move on to Logic Pro X, which is a pretty natural step since they have similarities.
