That’s a big ask brother. Your system is 12 years old!!

Once my iMac reached 10 years, it was time for a new machine. Even my I9 CPU in the old one wouldn’t allow my to use new Synth software, as it had missing feature.

Sorry to say, but it’s time for you to upgrade.

I can still run Superior Drummer 3.0 standalone and in Logic 9.1.8 with Multiface 2 at 64 samples latency without crackling. The multi-track DAW then runs loosely at 128 samples when mixing and at 256 samples when mixing very complex projects.
Of course, you’ll be reminded that you always need the latest version.
Yes, that’s true the system has grown old with me (I’m 56) but I can still drum quite well.
the investment in new hardware made by Apple is always more expensive, you can forget about buying a new Mac Pro. 12 years ago that was a lot of money for me, but it was still affordable.
I have to think about it, if i buy something new, or play until the computer gives up the ghost. 🙂

Im 53, so Im no youngster. My old i9 iMac could run anything great. But new technology and CPUs with new instruction sets are now being used and took advantage of.  Massive X synth from Native Interments would not work on my ole iMac as it needed a new CPU feature. If you think a new Mac is going to last you another 10 years, then its worth the upgrade price as it’s an investment.

I was lucky as I got a bit of money from my parents house that got sold, so I got a new maxed out 27″ iMac i9 with a 1TB SDD a about 5 months ago and stuck 48GB memory in it and an external 2TB SSD for Superior Drummer 3 and all the SDXs.

I do more than music on my iMac, Im a pro graphic designer. So I do Music (Logic Pro x), Graphics, 3D (Lightwave 3D) and video (Final Cut Pro) on it. This new one handles everything with ease.

and I sold my old 11 year old iMac for £600, so that helped 🙂

Get a pc. Much cheaper and more powerful. Easier and cheaper to upgrade the internals and DAW software seems to work better than on a Mac these days. I see so many Mac related problems with DAWs and SD3 than win 10 pc related issues. Of course Logic is out of the window as it’s Mac only. Good old Apple love to tie you down.

SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

lol, no thanks. I have never had any issues with Macs, but lots with windows and I build PCs all the time.

Interesting time to be looking at Macs. They’re changing their architecture to Apple Silicon. Not sure what that means from a marketing perspective. Could be a good time to get an intel Mac, however there will be a certain obsolescence built in as eventually they will not be supported. Another curse of interesting times.

I’ve got a 2009 MacBook Pro. It’s still running fine. Sure, struggling to load a full bleed kit for live playing, but I can work my way around that. But I fully accept the fact that at some point, I will need to upgrade. But as others have said, it’s an investment. My future new Mac should hopefully last me another decade. I’m not that worried about the “silicon” upgrade, Apple have always been good with backward compatibility.

One thing I will never do is get a PC. They don’t last more than a few years, you constantly have to be aware of driver compatibility, and you end up spending more time dealing with stuff like AISO versions than with actually making music. Not for me, sorry.

But yeah man, I feel you. Still, you got a decade of use out of your old Mac, maybe get a refurb and go on for another 10 years.

E-drummer. eDrumIn trigger interface with various Roland trigger pads. MacBook Pro (mid-2015); MacOS High Sierra; Logic Pro X 10.4.8. Superior Drummer user since 2009.

You are kidding right? I’ve only had SD3 a few weeks and been on the forum as long but there are way more Win 10 signatures that OS 10.x

Of course Logic is out of the window as it’s Mac only. Good old Apple love to tie you down.

So you can’t open a Logic file in Pro Tools – you can’t open a Pro Tools file in Cubase – DAW’s no matter what OS don’t talk to one another – can’t remember the last time I had a blue screen of death on a Mac (I haven’t), or had to rummage through a drawer to install drivers for a new printer (I haven’t)….

I have zero problems on my pc. I have just passed my last one onto my son which I was using since 2008. That’s 12 years. A couple of years ago I was able to get a faster processor off eBay for £30 and extra memory for about the same so I had 18gig and a 3.2gig overclocked to 4gig. Since windows 7 things have been good and windows 10 has been even better. How much would it cost to upgrade memory on a Mac? It may even be soldered to the board so you can’t. PCs are not the pain they used to be and you get far more bang for your buck. I build my own. I have done since the early 90s

Anyway off topic now. I’ll lEave you fan boys to your apples ( please take as a joke as I do own an iPhone and iPad )

Its cool mate, I have Windows 10 Pro running on my iMac too, and its running with an i9 CPU, 48GB men and Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB all on a SSD and with thunderbolt 3 ports. It runs better than on my PCs. But I only use it for the odd thing like Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 🙂 I do have all my SD3 and audio hardly on it too and all works fine.

Just my last Mac has never had one issue or crash in 12 years, it just works!

But, Superior Drummer 3 is brill whichever machine you use, and that’s the main thing.

Just better on Macs lol 😉

Mark it’s great you have a good experience with your chosen computer – but since you know absolutely nothing about an Apple Mac (1. The same price for DDR3/4 as a Windows PC from Crucial.com or any other memory chip vendor; and 2. Don’t be stupid) hold fire on telling us how bad they are please mate.

Don’t take it personally. It was a bit tongue in cheek
