How are you doing the drum tracks? Are programming the piano roll yourself? Can we hear them? That would help to work out what you could do.

Maybe spent more timing on dynamics and timing. EZD3 certainly has the tools for that.

This is the song in questionhttps://soundcloud.com/markpdwheatley/alice?si=4b60b349728f41ee9247dd652f92c7e3&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

I’m not programming the piano roll, I have not learned how to do that yet. I’m using bandmate and then picking drum patterns from the list it produces. I am not recording individual drums to tracks just using the stereo outs. I have put fills into the patterns and varied them for the different sections of the song.

Can you be a little more specific on the timing and dynamics? Is that the timing in the grid editor? If it is I’ve not been using that I’ve been using patterns that I’ve been picking in Band Mate are you suggesting that I should get into the piano roll the change the timings and swing?

I have it set to follow the timing in Logic Pro X is that correct? Can you expand on dynamic features?

    Many thanks for your help.

I’ve listened to Alice. The problem is what I thought it would be: the naysayers are talking squit. There’s nothing wrong with your song at all. Maybe the naysayers would like to try their own recording in ezdrummer.

I think the song sounds good. To me the cymbals seem low in the mix.  Not sure if that is on purpose or not. In the mixer section there are all kinds of adjustments you can make.

I just listened to the song. There’s nothing “robotic” about the song. It sounds like a song to me.

Do the naysayers even know what they mean when they say it “sounds like MIDI”?

I’m willing to bet they said something stupid like that because you told them you were using a drum software. Quite often, when I am tying EZD3 or SD3 to Logic’s Drummer, I will often tell people the name of the “Drummer” that was controlling the software when they ask. It often gives me a chuckle when I tell them, “Logan played drums on this song”.

Listened to the song. Drums are just fine. Ignore the knuckle heads. You’re doing just fine.

    BEST ANSWER

Further thoughts: it’s ‘too much like midi’ for someone. Given that the grooves were laid down by a pro drummer and playback is through a sampled kit, these whoevers are either clueless or too fussy to live. Maybe they are the kind to pick fault in everything. Your mix is dead right. You got the words clear without being too loud. That’s hard to get right when you know the. The naysayers should try doing what you do. The worst critics can’t do it themselves.

Some great answers. I have a picture of the late great Charlie Whatts as my Logic Pro Icon for drums. The kit I’m using has a similar sound I think to his. If anyone asks who the drummer is in the future, I will say a session drummer called Charlie.

To my ears the drums don’t sound like midi, my co-writer thinks the same, it’s just that three people I know made those comments, which was the reason for asking the forum the question. It’s the first time I’ve used the forum in the words of Arnie ‘I’ll be back.’

You’ve been brave enough to let us hear your song. My band’s album is soundcloud.com/avoidantnorwich.
