I’m trying to record drums (MIDI) from my Roland TD-30 through SD3 into a Pro Tools session. I have figured out how to use the standalone SD3 program to record the drums as MIDI, but with this method I can’t play along to other instruments in my session and I’m limited to SD3’s horrible metronome sounds.
How do I record MIDI into SD3 in Pro Tools, so I can record while listening to the Pro Tools click and the other instruments?
Thanks!
To record MIDI to the PT instrument track that SD3 is inserted on, like lostlure said, insert SD3 on stereo instrument track, record arm and hit play/record on the PT transport, done.
To record MIDI to track within the SD3 plug-in (to manipulate with the SD3 grid editor, for example), it takes a few more steps; (providing instructions for Mac as the OP has not indicated what platform they’re on and I use Mac)
1) Pro Tools – Preferences > MIDI Tab – Set “Default Thru Instrument” to “first selected MIDI Track” (Otherwise you have to record arm the track in PT)
2) Insert SD3 on a stereo instrument track
3) Open SD3 and make sure “Follow Host” is selected.
4) Select the record button on the SD3 transport.
5) Press Play on the PT transport.
