Looking for help with triggering my sd3 in reaper with a midi cable. It doesnt show up in reapers midi device list.
my drums will trigger the stand alone version of SD3. But not when I run the plug-in in reaper.
Im hoping someone can help or Ive wasted a ton of money.
Windows 11
Thanks
When using SD3 in a DAW it is not a MIDI device (at least it isn’t in Cubase) it is a Virtual Instrument plugin that needs to have a track assigned to it. (or needs to be assigned to track, depending on how you look at it) In Cubase that track is called an instrument track but it may be different in Reaper. If you have any other virtual instruments that you use, guitars, orchestral, whatever, you need to treat SD3 like you would those.
Hope this helps!
Cubase Pro, Korg Kronos, M-50, Hammond XK-1c, Toontrack SD3, EZBass w/lots of expansions, many VSL Vi's, Shreddage 3 everything, and shit-tons of FX plugins.
The first thing I would do is to grab the free MIDI-OX utility and run it. It will tell you if your ekit is sending MIDI messages to your computer. Amongst things it will tell you is what note is being played by your ekit. Start with the basics and go from there. And make sure your ekit and track in Reaper are listening on the same MIDI channel.

Hey thanks for responding! Im sure that the midi signal is getting to the computer. Like I said, when I run the stand alone sd3 it works just fine- the plugin in reaper doesnt though,
Im really starting to think that it’s either an issue with the plugin version of sd3 or an issue with Reaper itself.
Thank you so much for responding. Yeah, I under stand that sd3 is run as a plugin on a track. Im just having trouble triggering the plug-in

You trigger SD3 just like you would any other virtual instrument. Basic work and you really need to spend time learning these basics. Read the manuals that come with Reaper and watch some YouTube videos on the basics. Until you do that then anything else won’t help you.

Do you have a keyboard or another midi device to try? You say a midi cable but plugged into what? An audio interface or is it a usb midi device. Does it have a name and does it show up in reaper? Do you know how to setup a vst in reaper? If you load a reaper synth can you trigger that? This is not really an sd3 problem but a midi problem in reaper. Have you asked the reaper community?

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to respond kindly. Im using a midi cable from the Simmons sd1250 (Out) to the (In) on the Scarlett 18i20. I am not having any trouble triggering the stand alone SD3 with my Simmons SD1250 kit . So im thinking youre right about it being a Reaper issue. I have other controlers that work with usb midi on other plugins and SD3 but honestly this is the first time ive used a 5pin with my Scarlett interface. I initially thougt maybe there was a setting in SD3 plugin that i was missing. I have reached out to the Reaper community and waiting on a response. Just trying to cover all of the basics as am not an expert in midi as some proclaim.
Thank you so much for your time.
I got a response from the reaper community and the problem that there was a short between my keyboard and chair. For some reason i had to tell reaper to forget my Focusrite and re-set all midi devices. Normally I would have come to that conclusion on my own but for some reason… … … Anyway thank you all for trying to help.
🙂
