Hello everyone,
I am using Superior Drummer 3 with Roland VAD706 for at home, practice and on stage live performances with different USB audio interfaces.
– At home it is connected to the Roland TD-50X for audio output to the master mix but also the 8 channel outputs.
– At the practice location with the band it is connected to the Allen and Heath QU-SB directly with USB.
– The Live performance it is connected to an Allen and Heath QU-32 directly with USB.
This gives the best audio quality and 32 channel outputs for mixing and we are very happy with this
But every time when I connected it to a different audio interface I have to setup the audio interface output routing for the interface again for 32 channels.
Is there a tip/trick for this like a preset function like the Superior Drummer drum module preset function?
Kind greetings Wouter
I’m confused by your wording. It seems like you’re using the VAD706 MIDI to drive the computer that’s hosting SD3 right? Are you using SD3 in standalone mode or in a daw? Why connect to another drum brain like the TD50? What exactly is connected to the A&H mixers – the computer that hosts SD3? Is anybody else in your band using the A&H mixers or is it just you? This sounds more like it’s NOT an SD3 issue.

Hi Jack,
Thank you for your quick response!
The Roland VAD706 is using the TD-50X drum brain to the Macbook Pro with SD3, this is the “midi” connection for what I play.
SD3 is running standalone with it’s mixer settings to outputs configured for the audio output to TD50X back, A&H QU-SB or A&H QU32, no daw is used.
For the digital mixers of Allen & Heath it is possible to use them as audio interface with a USB connection. The audio becomes available as drum channels from my computer.
The audio signals from SD3 are then digital without analog sound loss available and pre mixed for the sound engineer.
It is not an real issue but every time I connect my MacBook to one of the three audio interfaces I have to setup manually all 32 output channels, because on default it is set to:
Out Channels
Output(L) 1: 1
Output(R) 1:2
Output(L) 2:1
Output(R) 2:2
Output(L) 3:1
Output(R) 3:2
I change this to all available outputs of the interface:
Out Channels
Output(L) 1: 1
Output(R) 1:2
Output(L) 2:3
Output(R) 2:4
Output(L) 3:5
Output(R) 3:6
Output(L) 4:7
Output(R) 4:8
What is your audio interface at home? It sounds like you’re using multiple USB connections with the two A&H mixers. Is SD3 running in multichannel mode? You’re using all 32 channels of the mixers for SD3? As I said it seems this isn’t really an SD3 issue.
Have a safe 4th of July

As Jack pointed out, this is not an SD3 issue. Audio management and handling is done through CoreAudio within the macOS. Any changes in your audio configuration is reported by CoreAudio into SD3. Unless you are able to save any type of configuration files for the audio interface you are using, you will need to reconfigure your audio by hand to account for any changes.
You might be able to handle your config changes via the Audio/MIDI utility. However, you’d need to try that out.

Thanked by: drumjack52Thank you all for your input and suggestions.
I looked to what is mentioned and it is not an Audio management or macOS thing, these are working good and are set in the right way.
Only one interface is connected, for the output of the sound.
The further specific mixer/audio interface settings I made with the “User Presets” function.
This is used for the correct routing for the interface I use at that time (see example picture when the audio goes to the Roland TD-50X).
To make clear I don’t want to call it an SD3 issue, but maybe an improvement/new option suggestion
Standard way of coming up of the SD3 Audio/MIDI Setup… -> Out Channels -> Selection “Use multi-out”> is by default:
Output(L) 1:1
Output(R) 1:2
Output(L) 2:1
Output(R) 2:2
Output(L) 3:1
Output(R) 3:2
It should be nice if you can “toggle” this from the default output numbering 1 and 2, to 1,2,3
Output(L) 1: 1
Output(R) 1:2
Output(L) 2:3
Output(R) 2:4
Output(L) 3:5
Output(R) 3:6
Output(L) 4:7
Output(R) 4:8
With this last output numbering setup I can control everything with the made “User Presets” function.
TD-50X
QU-SB
QU-32
You’re still looking at an operating system level issue which SD3 can’t address. Something that is not clear – are you talking about renumbering things in SD3 or somewheres else? And really does it matter what the numbers are in SD3? Not trying to be snarky but trying to understand what you’re trying to get at. Do I understand it that you want to renumber things depending on the interface in use? But renumber where?

Thank you Jack for your response!
It is good to talk about it to make it more clear and maybe somebody knows a better way or work around.
The renumbering is here in SD3 Out Channels -> Selection “Use multi-out”>, so this is not an macOS audio management menu:
Channel 1 to 32 I have to do it manually for all the 32 outputs, sitting behind my drum kit without the computer straight in front of me.
So this is not so comfortable action to do in preparation setup
Kind greetings Wouter
This is indeed a CoreAudio situation and not SD3. SD3 only maps the outputs according to what is reported to it by CodeAudio. Output management is dynamic and is based on the information received either directly from the device, in the case of class compliant devices, or through a driver. Considering that you are going between three different interfaces, it’s really not surprising that your output channels are being re-mapped by the system.

Thanked by: drumjack52Thank you Jord,
I think that I am special drummer with these setups
In the studio it is a mostly fixed setup instead of my dynamic setups.
Kind greetings Wouter
Dear Jack and Jordan,
Thanks to your input/reaction it gave me the idea to try something with the macOS “Multi output device” setting and this works.
Step 1
Now I have to select only the audio interface I want to use for the situation that I am (Audio interface at Home TD50-X, Practice location band QU-SB or QU-32 Live performance).
Selection from the menu to be made : TD-50X, QU-SB Audio or QU-32 Audio
Step 2
Start SD3, choose the stored Project with the right mixer preset and Start Drumming!
Settings in SD3
In the SD3 Audio/MIDI Setup… menu the settings are set to:
Output Device “Audio Interfaces 32ch”
Out Channels for the last time 32 channel reconfiguring
With this solution the 32 channel configuration is not resetted anymore, when I change to another connected audio interface.
No more manually readdressing 32 channels anymore
Cool that you got it sorted. Good luck with the setup.
And as always – have extra drum sticks – you can never have too many.

Aggregate devices will indeed work in your case, since they are all USB.
Have fun.

The op only needs one interface at a time so would aggregate really help? I’d only use aggregate if running more than one interface at a time.

Aggregate is not working for me because I need to stay in the numbering of channel 1 to 32 and aggregate is then numbering from channel 1 to 64.
Aggregate is also based on using multiple interfaces on the same time and make more inputs or outputs possible.
Correct.
