Hi,
So, whenever I open Reaper I keep getting an error message from Superior Drummer 3 saying: “Toontrack Superior Drummer 3 has crashed – A crash dump is available”. I have no idea why this is happening as Superior Drummer 3 is up to date and this happens in brand new files with new drum beats. I feel like my best option is just to delete the application and reinstall it, but that will take days due to how big the files are. If anyone has any better ideas then it would be appreciated!
Hi,
Please check if the standalone works. If it also crashes, attach that dmp file here (the first one that is created).
Often this is caused by a disk corruption where a sound library is installed. Reinstalling the software probably won’t help.

Thanked by: ewan2121Hi,
Thanks for the reply! The Standalone version seems to work without crashing although it does seem a bit buggy. For one, it won’t link up to my audio interface and instead outputs through my laptop speakers and when I try and adjust my laptop speakers it makes drum noises and still makes noise even when I have them muted. Furthermore, in the settings it says :E (the SD card that I have Superior Drummer 3 installed on) is not available and that I need to change or remove the path, despite still working fine otherwise. Do you have any idea how I should resolve this?

Is it an ASIO device? They are usually exclusive to one application at a time. Is Reaper running?
Furthermore, in the settings it says :E (the SD card that I have Superior Drummer 3 installed on) is not available and that I need to change or remove the path, despite still working fine otherwise.
Post a screenshot of SD3 with that message in settings visible, please.
When exactly does it crash in Reaper? If you make a new project, does it crash immediately when you try to add SD3 to a track? You can’t even see the SD3 window?

Hi,
It’s a Focusrite – Scarlett 2i2 which does use ASIO and it still outputs through the laptop speakers even when all other applications are closed.
I’ve attached the screenshot below.
Generally, it seems to crash within a minute or two of loading. If I boot up a new file without any VST’s added, it doesn’t crash but any project with SD3 in it will crash within a few minutes. I can usually open up the SD3 window and even get a few sounds out but it’s not long before the error message boots up and both SD3 and Reaper crash.
Have you tried to select the Focusrite device in Settings > Audio/MIDI Setup? What happens?
You have one working path to the library, E:\SL-SuperiorDrummer3, and one that doesn’t exist, E:\Superior Drummer 3\SL-SuperiorDrummer3. Remove the second one by selecting “Remove Path” from the menu next to it. The message that E: is unavailable is wrong/misleading, it’s just the path that doesn’t exist.
The same VST is loaded by the standalone and by Reaper, so it’s strange that it only crashes in Reaper. Does it crash before the entire library has been loaded? You see the loading bar in the upper right corner.
In the Grooves tab, does it say anything about database being updated? If so, does it finish before it crashes?
In Grooves, have you added any MIDI folders of your own? One possibility is that something in such a custom path causes SD3 to crash.
You can also upload another dmp file, maybe it will show me more than the previous one. (When it crashes, take the first dmp file that is generated.)

Hi,
After about 3 attempts I’ve managed to change the Focusrite settings to work with my interface, so there’s no more issues with sound coming out of the laptop speakers!
I’ve removed the additional path.
It used to be able to load in fully and it would just suddenly crash but now I can’t even get past the VST loading itself in before it crashes. I’ve also been getting a few “C++ Runtime Error” messages and a blue screen of death or two. I’m quite sure that this is caused by SD3 though as no other projects have crashed with any other plugins/VSTs so far.
It doesn’t say anything in the Grooves tab about updates and it has yet to crash when in the standalone version (after being open for about 1-2 hours) whereas in Reaper it takes seconds. Although, in the grooves tab it won’t play a fair few of the grooves as they have a warning symbol in their place. I’m not sure if this is because I don’t have the final bleed library installed or if it’s due to something else. I also haven’t added any midi folders of my own so it can’t be that.
I also don’t have any newer dmp files because it doesn’t even create a dmp file when it crashes anymore, or even an error message. It just shuts down and either goes to the home screen or occasionally to a blue screen of death.
Sorry for the delay. The grooves with the warning symbols are part of the EZdrummer 2 core MIDI, which you apparently no longer have installed. You get get rid of them from the listing by rebuilding the MIDI database in Settings > Advanced.

Ok, thank you.
Do you have any suggestions for the C++ Runtime error? As far as I can tell, this is at the root cause of all the crashes in Reaper when using SD3 and I have no idea how to correct it.
If you in the standalone open the Help menu and select “Show Plug-In Path”, does it say “C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\Toontrack\Superior Drummer 3.dll”? That’s the dll that was loaded in Reaper.
If the path is the same and the standalone works (including that the sound library loading bar reaches the end eventually), I can’t help but suspect that some other plug-in or driver in use by Reaper makes SD3 crash somehow. Maybe try disabling all other (or as many as possible) plug-ins in Reaper? Maybe also select a standard Windows audio device (not ASIO) and restart Reaper before you try to open SD3 in it.

Hi,
Yes I can confirm that it has says “C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\Toontrack\Superior Drummer 3.dll” when I check the plugin path.
I also don’t think it can be any other plugin as I’ve been creating songs with almost every other plugin that I commonly use besides SD3 (even including EZDrummer 2) and it has yet to crash once, whereas, as soon as I open SD3 it will crash within minutes.
I’ll try using something other than ASIO and let you know how that goes.
