I play edrums connected to SP3 on my 2023 Mac pro with 1TB of storage and have several SDX packs that I want to keep on my laptop hard drive to reduce latency/load times. I want to delete specific Toontrack presets and kits across several SDX’s to preserve storage but each file in finder is just labeled as like “soundb140.” Is there an easy way to identify the drum samples that I don’t need and remove them through finder? What’s the best way to only keep the drum samples I want to use? Also, is there some way to remove all midi packs?
Why not just get a decent external drive and store your samples there? You probably have a Thunderbolt connection of some type so use that. Deleting presets won’t help you gain all that much space. Same thing for kits. You’d have to delete specific samples as kits just grab whatever samples they need to make up the kit. There’s no easy way to find out exactly what samples you’ll need to delete. The samples are pretty much a monolithic block.

Thanked by: Tateb13I previously ran everything through an external SSD on my old laptop but I was told that loading the sounds from a separate hard drive was contributing to my latency issues. I have 16gb of RAM on my current laptop vs the previous 8gb so that’s significantly improved latency but I’m curious if you think I’d be able to move the files to an external hard drive without latency issues with the edrum connection. Thanks for helping me out here

With a fast connection for the drive and some form of ssd (think nvme drive) you’ll be in good shape. What you were told on whatever old laptop you had doesn’t apply to the new one. It’s a whole new ball game with the new Macs. What was the old laptop and exactly what new laptop do you have? For a good look at what you can get for your setup take a look at what OWC at http://www.macsales.com/ has. Good people. FYI when you say ‘Mac Pro’ most people think you’re talking about the desktop Mac and not a laptop. The laptops are commonly something like MacBook Pro or close to that.
As to latency that’s mostly due to your audio interface and not so much the loading time from a sample drive.

Thanked by: Tateb13Fr thank you so much – this is super helpful. I figured out a way to install the SDX’s I want without going over my internal storage limit but I definitely still think I’ll need an external hard drive at some point.
The old laptop was a 13-inch 2020 macbook pro with 8gb of RAM and like 250gb of storage, current laptop is the 16-inch 2023 macbook pro with 1TB and 16gb of RAM. I didn’t really think there were many opportunities to upgrade macbooks after buying them so I’ll definitely check out that link.
I’m curious now, since you said latency would be due to the interface, if there are any updates/upgrades to my current setup that I could make to reduce latency even more. The edrums are connected to a td-27 that connects to a presonus 24C through a midi cable and that’s the input I use for SP3. No worries if nothing comes to mind, I appreciate the input so far.

You’d not be upgrading anything internal but adding on stuff outside the computer. And you’re right – Apple’s made it so you can’t upgrade internals by yourself. If you are running SD3 standalone go to the audio/MIDI setup in SD3 and change the number of buffers there. A lower number will give you less latency at the expense of cpu usage and possible audio hiccups. You’ll have to experiment with that.
There’s also another latency people don’t talk about and that’s MIDI latency. There’s nothing you can do about that.
