Hi!
Yesterday I noticed something weird with the kick drum. I used a drum kit from Toontracks EZDrummer 2 and sent the pieces to a multi-track into my DAW (Cubase 8.5 Pro). Then I realized that all my drums that should be in “mono channels” in my DAW’s mix console actually was in stereo channels, like the kick, snare, hi-hat, etc. But to me they should all be in mono since those sounds are supposed to be captured using a single microphone, like vocals, guitars, bass, etc (unless you have more than one mic on them of course).
Well, I didn’t think about it at first and went away mixing the drums and for example adding a plugin like SSL EQ (in mono of course) on the kick drum. So, then I soloed the kick drum to listen to the sound I was making with the plugins, but…there was only a sound coming from the right speaker, nothing from the left speaker. I was like????
So I checked what was wrong and thought about having a stereo channel with a plugin in mono, so I realized I had to have a stereo plugin not a mono plugin on the kick drum, looooool!!! Well it worked so now I have the kick drum in both speakers, but… Really?? Is it the way iy should be; that we are mixing kick drums in stereo, etc?
Toontrack what’s your answer to this please??? How can I make mono channels when multi your drum program to the DAW, or shouldn’t I??
Anyway, many regards and I do like your drum programs, they sound real good!
EZdrummer 2 are using buses, meaning that a channel labeled “Kick” in EZdrummer 2 can consist of one, or several, microphones – to make it easier to mix! For example – the “Default” preset in EZdrummer 2 Modern library has a channel called “Kick” which consists of several microphones. If you want full control, use the “Original Mix” preset, in which you can access each microphone on it’s own channel.
It is no sonic difference between a mono channel and a stereo channel that has the same audio in both channels – so it will give you the same result, as if it was a mono channel.
