Not sure what the issue is but hitting “x” should stop all audio. Might hold you over for the meantime.

Thanks Shootie – sorry if I wasn’t clear. I’m working in Logic, using SD3 as a plugin. Everything works perfectly until I am not playing any audio. Then I hear effects from the plugin, even though everything has stopped. For example, I could be using a distorted drum preset in SD3 or one with some kind of compression effect, I’ll be recording or listening back to something, hit spacebar to stop, and I’ll still hear the distortion or the push/pull sound of the compressor. It’s still feeding through my meters too – so the SD3 plugin channel strip will show the sound there (i.e. it won’t reduce down to “zero”).

I was following you. And it’s not a solution but something to get you by until you find the problem/fix. If “x” doesn’t work in Logic, you can use the Edit Menu in SD3 and select Stop Audio. You’ll at least be muted for the moment.

it has been my experience that if you’re cranking a lot of distortion/saturation through any plug-in, not just SD3, you’re going to get some noise even if no audio is running through the plug in.  The only caveat is: what is “a lot.“

Output gain on a plug-in will raise the noise floor regardless of the plug-in itself. Unless you are willing to put a noise gate on the drum bus and deal with different issues such as decay, let it go if it is not noticeable in the mix. Hearing a little noise when music is not playing is not really an issue. That’s just a factor and part of the consideration of using a plug-in.

It doesn’t seem to make any difference (whether pressing X or selecting stop all audio).

I still get constant output – around -45db which is “pumping” in and out – presumably something to do with the effects in SD3? But the SD3 mixer itself shows no output when nothing is playing, and there are no other plugins on any of the instances.

The SD3 preset is “Old Skool”, if that is useful.

Edit: seems to be linked to the “Fat Muff” plugin in SD3…

It’s not a problem when things are playing – it’s quite a nice effect. It’s that I still hear it when nothing is playing 🙂

That’s what you get with that type of effect. There are similar effects in Cubase and they make a noise when nothing is playing. Why not gate the output?

yes, “old skool” and other presets have insane compression, tape and or distortion noise.

Most of these crazy pre sets have macro buttons near the bottom of the plug in interface where you can dial that back The macro buttons are awesome. You may even want to automate those macro button parameters. Thats an elegant way to have them full thrust when the track is rolling, but completely  silent when there is no playback and during quiet parts of the song. I automate the macros all the time. great for tom rides and other tweaky mix moves.
