[Sonar] Placing drum fills in pattern question

Hi folks,
I am relatively new to EZ Drummer and I love it. Using with Sonar 6P. I have a question regarding adding in drum fills on the midi track.
Can I simply pull the fill pattern I want over the existing drum tack, (on the midi clip) without cutting and pasting?   Or do I need to cut the existing pattern to put in the fills?  So far, I have been cutting the pattern and putting in the fills, but it is labor intensive, so I am wondering if just dragging the fills over the pattern would work just as well?

I’m not familiar with Sonar but with Cubase, Reaper, and Samplitude you can select a MIDI groove click and drag to the left to shorten it without having to ‘Cut’ it. You can then drag and drop your fill into the space you made. If I want a 2 beat fill, I’ll shorten my main groove by 2 beats by dragging it to the left and then drag my fill. It will fit rhythmically. Some slight tweaks and I move on.

Sonar will let you do that also. However, nothing to say you can put a fill on TOP of a groove either. Who cares if the drummer has 4 arms if it sounds good? well…I do know some people care, but it’s the end result imo.

also, in Sonar, check out track layers. That way you can keep the MIDI on one track, but keep fills, like what you want to do on a separate layer…should you want to process them differently, etc.

Right On!! ( some sixties lingo for the younger crowd.) I do the same thing in cubase. I think one needs to approach this whole recording thing like painting a picture. you draw the background first then move forward to the foreground. I start off by putting down a basic beat track. Then I add a scratch guitar track. Then make another track right below the first drum track and start adding fills, etc. I have been using Latin Percussion quite a bit and add that below the fill track and another for LP fills. Never would I try to put everything on one track. I also am not a big fan of individual tracking. I find the canned mixes work very well. You have to remember this is not an analog drum set and doesn’t work the same way. I think the Toontrack stuff works very well for my purposes. Like everyone else I ger perplexed with the registration thing but haven’t had any issues for quite some time.Just my $.02 worth.
