Hello,
I’ve used SD2 for many years and upgraded to SD3 when it was released. However due to the different interfaces and lack of time, I decided to let the already ongoing projects stay with SD2 while I have experimented with SD3. While I appreciate the possibilities with the new SD3-sets I still prefer some of the drums and cymbals from a few SD2 SDX’s, especially the Progressive Foundry, which also has the extended number of cymbals (in the graphics at least).
I’d guess the answer would be to use the library with the drum kit I want to use, but still there would be quite some fiddling necessary to handle all the different microphones in different environments, as well as level differences between the libraries.
Thanks /Hasse
I have found it easier to open a SD3 library and then swap out each component from whichever sdx I want.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

Thanked by: Hasse FXI take it in context. Whatever the main kit needs to sound like, from tonality to ambience, is what determines which library I will start with.

Thanked by: Hasse FXHi,
“better” is subjective but IMHO you will be better off in the long run if you at least start every new project with the SD3 plugin, even if you just load your “old” SDX:s and presets.
Then I would say just experiment and trust your ears, you can’t break anything. Positions will in general not differ much, rooms and microphones will. Sometimes mixing kit pieces from different libraries and rooms is just the spice your sauce needed.

Thanked by: Hasse FXThank you all for your insights! So far my “conversion” is on track and I have been able to tweak the SD3 kits to my liking. I especially appreciate the extended articulations. With some careful tweaking, sounds from the other libraries fits in nicely and survives even heavier compression.
