I can’t be the first person trying to reproduce that awesome rock and roll sound of the snare on Heart’s Barracuda. I can’t really find anything that definitively says what the snare was that he used but I have to assume that somewhere in my libraries is a snare that fits the bill and will likely need tweaking in the mixer but I feel like none of the many snares has this sound. I have fields of rock, legacy of rock and of course the stock sd3 library. anyone have perhaps a preset they can share with me that has this sound if you have any of those libraries?

I did find something under Legacy of Rock that seems close enough that I could tweak. It’s a supraphonic. (shocking) LOL
The one I found had a decent baseline to work from was 5×14″ Ludwig 400 Supraphonic B/O Badge 1970s. Though I do see there is a 402 of same but I feel like the sound on the 400 was better. Not sure if it’s b/c of the presets or what but it just sounds better to me. The article says it was a 402 but again…..
a lot of it has more to do about the recording and production of the snare than the differences in the model itself. The tuning of the 400 and the way it was hit may give you a closer match. Legacy of Rock SDX is probably the optimal choice since the era of the equipment used to record the snare, is closer to the period of the time when Little Queen came out. Using an 1176 plugin along with a Pultec EQ plugin will get you closer to the Barracuda type sound you’re looking for.

Would you able to expand a bit on those plugins? I’m still pretty new to this whole VST drumming software thing. How does that plugin work to get the sound closer? Not really looking to spend more money on plugins. is there not something within the stock mixers in SD3 that would get this closer? I just don’t know enough about the various compression and other tools or affects etc. to even know what direction to go aside from just trying them and experimenting.
Considering that you are pretty new to software drums, and probably audio production in general, I would be more inclined to recommend getting a couple of course that teach mixing, in order to get a handle on the why’s and the how’s. This way, you could be more familiar with the plug-ins you already have. Once you have some of the fundamentals down, you would be in a better position to know which plug-ins would be more suited for you.
That being said, the 1176 was one of the iconic compressors of the 70s. The Comp 76 will come close, if that is good enough. You might be able to sub in the the EQ84 for the Pultec and add in a bit of tube saturation via overdrive. Add a tape saturation on the output.
Fortunately all of these are available within SD3.

Do you per chance have a preset in your SD3 that sorta mirrors what you are talking about? Perhaps If you could share that, I could look at the mixers and visually see what you are referring to?

Thanks so very much! I will play with it. I was actually messing around this morning with some of the compression settings and started to sorta get an idea of how drastically it changes the whole sound. pretty amazing stuff.
Compression can be a wonderful thing when applied in its proper context. The 1176/Comp 76 is one of my favourites for drums.

So I went back to my original preset and played more with the comp 76. I feel like this is pretty close? though I need to listen a bit to the song. kinda hard to really tell but it sure sounds decent.
I listened to it alongside the song and it’s close. To keep it 70’s, I added a bit of grit on the snare and some tape saturation on the output for a bit of “splat” and played it alongside the song. I adjusted the attack and release of the Comp 76 as well.
If you look up Mick Fleetwood on Wikipedia there is a tab called equipment. He used Tamba in the studio and Ludwig live. In that era. Also, I believe it was a 400 from what I read.

Mick Fleetwood is part of Fleetwood Mac. They didn’t record Barracuda. It’s from Heart’s album Little Queen.
Rumours however is another great recording. Love the Sound City sound
