Hi folks.
As the title suggests, I’m very new to all this and have a question which is no doubt blinding obvious, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated:
For the last few months I’ve been purchasing both software and hardware to get a small home studio setup going. I finally acquired all the stuff I was aiming for and now I’m looking to record properly. I’m using a 2011 MacBook Pro with Logic X, a Universal Audio Apollo Twin for my interface and SD3 for all my drum writing requirements. I purchased SD3 first as I thought I could start writing all the beats for the songs I had in mind while I saved up for all the other bits I was needing, and I’m now at the stage where I’d like to import these song files into Logic so I can start adding the additional instrumentation.
I really like the ‘Slow Heavy Pearl’ preset in SD3 and used it for writing all my songs, but I’m at a loss as to how I transfer these arrangements over to Logic with all the effects and levels intact. Every time I use the ‘Bounce’ function and export the song in question as individual tracks, everything sounds drastically different during playback in Logic. It’s like all the effects have been removed and all I’m left with is the raw samples, which is far from ideal! I was under the impression that bouncing would retain all the EQ, effects, etc present during playback in the SD3 stand alone plugin, but it would appear that’s not the case? If so, can anyone explain to me how I can achieve this?
I apologise for my lack of insight here and I appreciate all I’m doing is highlighting my own inexperience, but I’m not really seeing any solutions to this elsewhere online and thought this would be the best place to ask. Again, any advice/assistance would be massively appreciated!
Thanks.
Thanks for replying, Matthew!
Can you explain in more detail how I would go about doing this? When I look at the mixer window for the ‘Slow Heavy Pearl’ preset I’m using, it states there are 12 mics for the individual elements of the kit (most of which have instances of EQ), 2 additional user mics, 8 buses with numerous instances of effects on both the buses themselves and the ‘bus sends’, and finally 3 separate instances of EQ along with a classic compressor and tape machine on the main out. I understand in order to retain the effects during playback in Logic I can create additional buses in SD3, send the 8 buses I mentioned earlier to those new buses and then in turn route those to Logic, but SD3 doesn’t give me to option to route the main out with all it’s effects, which obviously has a significant impact upon the overall sound.
The only ‘solution’ I’ve found so far is to highlight the entire arrangement I’ve made using SD3’s grid editor and drag it into Logic. From there I can convert that MIDI file into audio, but of course this means all I’m left with is a single stereo track for the drums and that’s not much use if/when I wish to change any of the individual elements later on during the mixing process. Ultimately, I’d like to have the kick, snare, etc listed as individual audio tracks in Logic much like a real drum kit, but with all the preset effects I hear during playback in SD3.
Again, I’m frightfully new to all this and I do apologise for asking stuff that is no doubt very simple and straight forward to those who are familiar with this kind of thing, but speaking as a inexperienced user, it appears to be highly convoluted and somewhat counter-intuitive for SD3 to allow the user to create drum arrangements using it’s built in presets and grid editor if all this gets thrown into disarray when it comes to routing it all into a DAW. I’m finding it all horrendously confusing and frustrating, so any help is extremely welcome!! Cheers.

Thanks John!
I’m getting an ‘Access denied – you do not have permission to view this page’ message whenever I click on the 2nd and 3rd links you sent, which is unfortunate as both sound as though they would be of use to me. Any idea if there’s a way around that?
