alright so where to begin? this is my set up that hasn’t changed aside from the Roland module since 2020.
2018 Macbook Pro
Studio One 3.5.6.46910 OSX x64 (Built March 20th 2018)
M-Audio Uno Midi to USB cable
SD3 Death and Darkness
I used all of this with my TD30 and have never had issues plugging and playing. I only ever needed to adjust the Midi mapping once and after that it was completely good to go. samples were triggered properly and written accurately every time at any speed/tempo. I upgraded from the TD30 to a Roland TD50x about a year and a half ago or so and then recently upgraded to the 71 probably around November or December of 2024. since trying to use the 50 and now the V71 all that time ago, I have not been able to get the Midi writing or triggering to function properly. the issues I have now are the same things that started with the 50 that I have never been able to resolve or find any info about online.
Basically, when the kit is being played and or recorded, it drops hits on the ride cymbal (sometimes) and kicks at random (virtually all the time at most tempos) . it almost seems like its overloaded or something but it can not handle doing blast beats with the ride/hi hat, snare, and kicks going at the same time. on top of this, it began writing/recording midi in a way I had never encountered before where it now has extremely long sustains on some of the drums that were hit. this is an intermittent thing from drum to drum but it always happens with a number of pads at a time. it doesn’t actually hold the note though, just writes it that way. I have multiple snare rim samples across the piano roll being written when only playing the center of the drum which kind of seems like cross talk as well as random toms being written in when i do fills. The velocities also seem to be a little inaccurate at certain times with some drums but again, could be pad settings or “cross talk” since those notes are always super low velocity.
I JUST updated the firmware on my V71 for the first time and added the drivers for it to my computer which has fixed nothing with the situation. I have heard that USB 3.0 has been an issue with the TD50 and things like this but I have no idea how to bypass using that since the USB-C inputs on my computer are all thunderbolt 3.0.
I hope someone has dealt with this because it has been driving me crazy trying to look for any info between here and the Roland support pages.
First thing I usually tell people to do when they are having supposed MIDI problems is to get the free utility snoize. You run it in standalone mode and it will tell you what is being sent from any device connected via MIDI. If everything is as you think it should be that would tend to rule out the drum brain.

I’m not sure whether it seems to be working properly or not after using that. I don’t know every possible midi note it would or should be activating internally or how exactly its supposed to read, it seemed to look the same way when I would use the Midi monitor in Superior as well but this has happened between 2 Roland series now that both feature the digital USB cables. I couldn’t imagine that I some how got 2 faulty brand new modules. I had gotten a faulty tom pad with the TD50x out of the box that I sent to get repaired, had returned to me and it was dented, so I ended up needing to send it back again. Unless their quality control has gone way downhill maybe its possible.
Get with Roland tech support and ask them if the particular setup you have is compatible with each other. Tell them everything – any adapters included. The Roland documents should be able to give you what each pad puts out in the MIDI stream. If not Tech support should have that info.

SOLVED
I didn’t realize how simple the fix was because my set up had been working for me for so long but basically I had to take the MIDI to USB cable out of the equation and use the USB-C out on the side of the module which took care of most of the problem but still had some hi hat issues with the accuracy of the triggering. Once I had updated SD3 a couple weeks ago I noticed that it now had a V71 specific mapping preset and had selected it as far as I could tell then remapped a few things but I guess it turns out I was still modifying a TD30 preset or something because I went in and selected it again and everything worked perfectly. I guess being overwhelmed with the idea of my set up working for as long as it did and not knowing where to start with the mountain of trouble shooting possibilities made me overlook some more obvious solutions. I hope this helps someone else in the future.
