Hi,
I have a Roland SPD-SX Pro with FD-9 hihat pedal KT-10 kick pedal. I’m using the trial of EZ drummer 3 and trying to see if I can get the hihat pedal to work to my expectations. I want:
– Just one pad to trigger hi-hat hits. I’m fine with only one articulation (tip/edge) for now. What I don’t want is to have to hit one pad for “open” and one for “closed” hat hits.
– FD-9 pedal position to signal openness/closedness of the hat, preferably somewhat continously.
– a stomp on the FD-9 should give a “chick” sound and, if any other hi hat notes are ringing, stop them
Basically just something reasonably close to the behavior of a real hihat pedal.
I’ve used the Roland SPD-SX Pro Preset and a custom kit/MIDI setup and I can get pretty close to something playable, but
– I can’t figure out how to make stomping on the pedal give a “chick” sound. I have the Roland configured to send note 42 on closed-pedal, but I hear no sound.
– the position of the pedal does control open/closedness of the hat, sort of: visually, in the graphical kit, I can see it move; and it “works” in that I hear an appropriately open/closed sample IF I click the mouse on the hihat while the pedal is in a particular position. But I’m trying to set this up for performing. If I hit the pad on the SPD-SX Pro (sending say note 44) I just hear whatever articulation has been assigned/learned for note 44 (say, “closed tip”). I can see MIDI In flicker between CC4 and 44 and the graphics even go back and forth– closing when I hit the pad, opening when I move/lift the pedal, like the two signals are competing with each other rather than being synthesized.
Is what I’m asking for possible? If so, what I am doing wrong in the EZDrummer setup (or perhaps in my Roland Kit MIDI setup)? If there an idiot proof way to get this to work based on the Roland’s factory settings/presets and your own preset?
Thanks
Oh, and I’ve tried the three different options for “openness transitions” and they all display the weird “competition” behavior between the pedal and the pad.
Maybe another clue: I can’t see to trigger the “Hats Splash Effect” no matter how high I turn up the sensitivity.
Thanks!
