The 14×24 Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple kick (the green one) sounds like it has been processed. Its very clicky and similar in tone to some of the one shot samples. Can anyone shed any light on this or has something gone wrong when I’ve downloaded the samples.
What mics are you using? If Rock Foundry is like Death & Darkness I’ve found the LDC mics to be a bit clicky sounding. I tend to back them off and go more for dynamic mics.

Ported Yamaha, maple, kick drums are clicky by nature. They are very bright sounding. If you want something less clicky in that SDX, the Ludwig kits are better suited.

Thanked by: drumjack52Thanks for the replies. I will try and upload some audio examples because the maple kick in D&D sounds a lot more raw than the kick I mentioned.
Here’s a comparison of the green kick in Rock foundry with the maple kick in D&D. The green kick sounds preprocessed to my ears. Is that just me?

There is a difference between the 2. What exact kick are you using from Death and Darkness? Remember that each SDX was recording in different studios with different equipment. What mics are you using in each case? The large diaphragm condensers have a somewhat exaggerated high freq response compared to dynamic mics in drum use in the SDX’s. Not a fan of LDC’s for kick drums.

It’s the DW maple in the D&D SDX. Both examples are the direct microphones in the default balance. So for D&D it is the condenser, 2 dynamic mics and sub. For Rock Foundry it is just the kick and Sub channels.

Two completely different drums. With two completely different recording setups and mics used in recording the SDX. Is bleed enabled?

Thanked by: drumjack52Yeah I get that… but it is the only kick drum out of all the libraries I have that sounds like it has been preprocessed, every other kick sounds like a raw kick drum. Even within this SDX it sounds preprocessed. If you have the SDX then perhaps you might see where I am coming from?

You still don’t understand – the kick you’re on about is recorded in a totally different environment than any other SDX. Until Toontrack records every SDX in the same environment with the same mics and setup and producer they are all going to sound different. We’re at that mercy if you will. Live with it and if you don’t like clicky drop the levels on the condenser mic and just go with the dynamic mic.
Take it from someone who’s been on both sides of the glass – the sound all depends on the engineer and producer as to how the final product comes out. Add in the different electronics and all bets are off. Same setup with a different beater and the kick will sound different. Let’s not even get into the differences in heads.

There isn’t an option for using a condenser mic or dynamic mic. I was looking for someone to chime in who has this particular SDX or knows anything about the recording of these samples in particular. I am curious if something has gone wrong in my download (and if I need to reinstall)

They recorded the library without using a condenser mic? Strange.

There were several mics on that kick drum including an AKG C414 on the batter side. The mics were summed into a single channel. Most producers/engineers use some degree of processing whilst tracking.

That C414 explains much about the so-called clicky sound. As to summing every mic to one channel is why I like the way Death of Death & Darkness was recorded so I can manipulate each mic separately.
