Hello!
First, I’m a novice with this so forgive me for my ignorance. What I’m trying to do is record what I’m playing on my kit directly into Reaper as I’m playing it. Almost every video I’ve seen is showing a track that is already recorded and putting that in Reaper, but that’s not what I’m wanting to do. I’m also not wanting to separate every piece of the kit into its own track. For now, I just want one track recording what I’m playing.
So far, I’m able to select the SD3 plugin in Reaper, and if I hit record and click on the drums in the window that pops up, it does record those sounds. But when I play anything on my kit, it doesn’t recognize that I’m playing. I’ve used SD3 to record directly in SD3 before, and that’s worked just fine. But is there something different I have to do to make the plugin recognize that I’m playing the drums?
Thank you in advance for all of your help!

SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
The MOTU M2 does have a button on it that lets me monitor what is being played (so I guess that is what they mean by direct monitoring), which I know that I can use, but I would prefer to hear the guitar with distortion if the end result is going to have distortion. Just to make sure everything sounds good as I’m playing it.
The image in that post was just of the splitter cable.
I found the ASIO setting and was able to select my audio interface, and by doing that, I’m getting about 4-5 ms of latency, which is awesome! I’ll still probably try getting one of those cables to see which method I like better, but thank you to everyone once again for all of your help! I greatly appreciate it!
Does the motu have direct monitoring? Does it come with its own mixer? (Like RME or focusrite) if it does then you don’t need a splitter. Most audio interfaces allow monitoring before it goes through the DAW.
Of course, if you use direct monitoring you do not really need the splitter. But direct monitoring will only let you hear your electric guitar completely clean (which is the way it is recorded in the track’s takes). Our friend has been able to get a very low latency out of his interface, so as long as he does not use too many instruments and effects at the same time, or freezes/render some of them as he is finished with some of them, he can record his guitar with any amp simulator and do without direct monitoring.
I mentioned the splitter because when your latency is too high, you can record your takes even with NO MONITORING and listen to what you’re playing NOT through your track monitoring or clean direct monitoring, but plugging the second output of the splitter into your own amp (with your own pedals, if you have them) and get a real amped sound without any latency while you are recording a clean output sound from your electric guitar. Once you have finished recording your takes, you can insert your amp simulater in your guitar track and tweak your sound at your taste.

Superior Drummer 3 version: 3.2.7
Operating system: Windows 10
4 to 5 ms latency? That’s amazing. With that kind of latency you won’t need a splitter. Even a drummer would have no problem playing along with those numbers.

Thanked by: entner.chrisYes I would be totally happy playing with those latency values. No point in a splitter as it will give you the same as direct monitoring. From what you are saying you are using an amp/effects simulator in reaper.

So after even a bit more messing with settings, I now have my latency at 2.2 ms 😀 This is awesome!
