Hi everyone,
I own a Roland Td-50X with the digital hi-hats, and have (finally!) taken the plunge into the SD3 world. It’s absolutely amazing to me, even just the core library. Night and day difference compared to the module sounds.
However, after hearing that many of the more recent sdx expansions have many more articulations and respond even better to e kits I think I might splurge on the 3 SDX bundle pack.
I’ve been looking at Decades as a starter, then maybe Fields or Legacy of Rock. For the third one I’m thinking maybe Hitmaker for that 80’s vibe, or Rooms of Hansa for a roomier vibe?
I like everything from jazz, to classic rock, blues, a bit of pop, prog and fusion. I like heavier rock but I stop short of metal.
Essentially, what would you choose if you could pick 3 SDX’s that cover a wide range of genres, and sound great out of the box when played with e drums?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Andrew
Really hard to say as they all have something interesting. Just make sure you don’t get one if the older sdx’s which came out with sd2 as these don’t have all the articulations
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
Fields is my go-to for general playing. Hitmaker works very well for Collins/Genesis and Copeland/Police covers. For Hansa I like the marble room acrylic for 80s sound, and only occasionally play the other rooms (Meistershaal has a lot of depth and responds well to changing the mic balance). The Legacy amber kit sounds quite amazing, and while the other kits have a tight sound for 70s rock covers, I don’t find myself playing them for fun very much.
Everybody has their preferences but these are the ones I gravitate to.
As a surprise to me, I held off buying this for a while, but the Stockholm SDX works real good with my TD27 with the new Hats.
As mentioned Fields of Rock and Death and Darkness are faves too
Superior Drummer 3 version: 3.3.6 EZ Bass 1.1.8 EZ Keys 2 2.0.4
Operating system: MacOSX 15.7 Catalina and Win10 64
My fave so far is Progressive foundry – modern kits and cymbals. It may be marketed at metal – but, its just modern drum sounds that can be used in various genres.
The DW kit sounds incredible and the cymbals are bright and punchy
