Hello,
I own a Native Instruments Maschine Micro which i basically only use in MIDI mode as a drumpad. I’ve mapped it so that the first pad is C1 and the rest follows up and while it’s playable, the default kit layout is far from optimal. I have too much snares, the toms disposition looks random, i don’t have access to the china, etc.
I was wondering if there is sort of a recommended or standard layout for easy playing and maximum access to the kit elements. Also, as i can set the color of each pad manually, is there some kind of standardized color code that most drummers share?
Thanks
The only recommendation that I can give you based on my use of the Maschine controller for over a decade is to map the pads to SD3 according to your playing style. One of the main features of Maschine is that you can create 16 different pad groupings. Thus you can create different groupings according to variances in your playing style. I have different groupings, set up for playing grooves with hi-hats and ones for playing grooves with the various cymbals. You do not need to have everything mashed up into one grouping. One of the best advantages that we have using a MIDI controller is that we can change our pad arrangements on the fly.
There are plenty of examples on the Internet. One of my favourite places to go is The Quest for Groove. Robert Mathjis is very adept at playing drums with MIDI pad controllers.

Well, the thing is i have very little experience with drums, so i basically don’t have a play style.
Thanks for telling me about The quest for groove, it looks like the thing that i need.
If you have done any type of finger drumming on a desk, then you have a style. The same goes if you used a keyboard . All you are really doing is paying attention to how you use your thumb and fingers and setting your pads up accordingly. The website will get you acquainted with some basic rhythms. Once you have those, you should be able to take it from there.
