Hi,
I have just installed a new OS, Win7 64bit, on my PC and after some small issues I managed to solve, I must say I am very pleased with Windows 7.
Now, here is my problem: In the process of installing all my software I made a mistake with installing EZDrummer, I installed it onto D but it’s .dll onto C), so I had to uninstall it I need to install it again.
After uninstalling EZDrummer I also uninstalled the e EXZs that I had installed at that point.
I know that every time a software is installed, then uninstalled and installed again, this will leave some traces in the registry.
Since I’m still just at the start of setting everything up, I would not mind wiping the drive again and installing Windows over again, or do you think this is non-sense?
I was worried about re-activation my Windows since I had it already activated, but I read up on some MS sites, that activating again after a re-install is no issue, so that is not going to be a problem.
What would be the best thing to do at this point?
I really want to make sure I get a very clean and tidy set-up and the fact that I had to uninstall some software just to install it again, bothers me.
Does an uninstall of EZDrummer and of EZXs cause any ‘dirt’ to stick in the registry? Especially when EZDrummer was uninstalled FIRST and then the EZXs?
Thanks,
Lars

You say you have already uninstalled everything, is that correct? – if not all you have to do is move the dll into the folder of your choice on the drive of your choice and then make sure your DAW knows its location, once you have done that you may need to rescan vst’s so your DAW knows it is actually there.
If you have already reinstalled then sorry I dont know the answer.
advising others to ‘move’ installed components is bad advise, but as they say advise is cheap 🙂
to the OP, I’m not sure why you would need to reinstall your system if you experience no issues. It is true that there are leftover registry entries upon uninstallation of EZdrummer but these will be re-updated as appropriately on reinstallation – every single one of them if your system is functioning properly.
So, I’m not sure the benefit you would derive from a full OS reinstall. And that’s coming from someone with (mild?) OCD my friend 😉

Thanks Rogue!
Yes, I know that I can’t just manually move the .dll file around, so I did not do that.
What you are saying makes a lot of sense, but, I already did re-install my OS (d’uh)…..
What is OCD?
Oh, obsessive-compulsive disorder? Oh, yeah I have that, too, not just mild! I’m sure you noticed that already 😉

Perhaps we should agree to differ on this. Given the choice between moving (or perhaps copying would have been better) the dll or doing a complete OS reinstall, I would move the dll. As the dll is ‘used’ by other applications who maintain their own record of where it is (once you have told them), to me it is the sensible route, especially if the user allready has a folder dedicated to vst’s. If it was an exe we were talking about there is no way I would advise moving it.
Moving the .dll will cause any future update to fail. Move them at your own risk.

but we are not talking about an OS reinstall. I agree that it can take a long time to uninstall EZdrummer and EZX-s if you have many, but this particular scenario did only require EZdrummer itself to be uninstalled and reinstalled to set the dll in the desired folder, a 10 min process at the most I guess.
Anyway, I’m not arguing the point needlessly, believe me, but moving the dll is the number one cause of support issues (after users not even bothering with the products updates, which exist for a reason obviously), so I always get worked up when I see such advises. NO component installed by a MSI should EVER be moved manually, it’s a recipe for confusion at a later point, at the very least, and in some instances a cause for immediate punishment.
But like you said, it’s not necessarily easy from a user point of you to consider any drawbacks, especially when the result desired is seemingly obtained by a simple moving of files, so I understand where you’d be coming from, on a pragmatic level 🙂
