EZX and SDX expansions are two different products, in that EZXs do not have the all of the channels and bleed (hence the footprint of an SDX). While you can use EZXs in SD3, if you want the SDX, you need to purchase them. Considering that the SDXs are on sale, however, it’s not a bad time to get them.

Well, there is a general misconception that EZX:s derived from an SDX (and there aren’t that many) are more or less the same products with a few less options.

This is not the case; EZX:s are pre-mixed expansions with low memory footprint produced as the Producer for that particular expansion imagined, with a selection of instruments.

The pre-mixed Snare e.g. for an EZX will not sound and behave exactly the same as in an SDX from the same recording session. In the SDX it can have more tools, articulations, etc. and also another processing.

In an SDX there are a lot more instruments included than in an EZX.

The EZX:s and SDX:s also have different accompanying MIDI content.

Thank you for the replies. I understand now. I decided to invest in SD3 so I might as well get the things that bring out it’s power!

I’ve been wanting to take advantage of the SDX sale, specifically Custom & Vintage and Independent. Listening to only the presets – I found a Youtube channel playing through all presets of the SDXs I wanted to hear – it seems like the sound of those are covered fairly well with the stock SD3 kits/presets.

Any C&V and/or Independent owners care to share opinions on those libraries?

I’ve got C&V as well as Indiependent and they are very different in their tonality as well as ambience. There’s a certain closeness to them and yes, while you can try to replicate this type of feel, these were recorded with that feel already built in, most due to being done in smaller rooms. To me, it’s more than just the sound. It’s sometimes the feeling of being the in that room that has an effect on everything else I record. There are also some kits that you won’t find in SD3’s core library.
