We endeavour to maintain a FAQ for the particulars of the 64 bit Public Beta. Feel free to use this topic to ask questions that you would like clarification on – But PLEASE do not post reports of issues or success stories herein, the rest of this board is the more appropriate place for this.
Q: I’m on a Mac, is this 64 bit thing of any interest to me?
A: no. the 64 bit Public beta preview is Windows only at this stage. Once more host applications on the Mac side are released for 64 bit operation we will of course endeavour to cater for our Mac users out there… it may take a while before 64 bit is of much relevance on that platform however.
Q: Is ProTools supported?
A: no. Digidesign are yet to announce plans for a 64 bit version of ProTools. Do not confuse the recent Windows 7 beta of ProTools announced as 32 and 64 bit compatible. What is meant is that the 32 bit ProTools application should be able to operate under either Windows 7 32 bit or Windows 7 64 bit. It is not however a 64 bit application.
Q: why can’t I install the VST where I want?
A: for your projects created with the 32 bit of Superior to load with the 64 bit version without you having to reconfigure your kits and tracks, it was essential that the dll retained the 32 bit dll name. This means that they cannot be located in the same directory, or one will overwrite the other, leading to undesirable scenarios. For this reason we are forcing the installation to a ‘safe’ fixed path on your system, where we know the chances of a 32 bit dll existing there is almost nil.
Q: OK, but why do you state I can’t move the dll after installation?
A: well, you can move it to a different directory, but to what purpose? your host should be able to pick it up in this location and this will ensure that any intermediary beta we may release overwrite the older one. We therefore do not recommend moving the dll from the original location – this is asking for trouble for zero benefit!
Q: when will you release the ‘official’ 64 bit version?
A: like everything we do – when we deem we can offer sufficient guarantee of a (close to) 100% positive user experience. As a plugin maker, this is no mince meat. Driver issues and manufacturers commitment to make their hardware work reliably in 64 bit OSes is a matter of case by case. Because we can’t start validating each and every brand and model of sound card out there, we simply have to play it by ear. This may mean that the ‘official’ release is some way away.
Q: does this mean we are indefinitely in limbo and at the mercy of incompatibilities?
A: no. Many hardware manufacturers have mature 64 bit drivers and the leading host applications developers are very much on top of their game. If your sound card or host is generally behaving adequately in your 64 bit environment then you should have no problem.
Q: so what have you tested this thing on then?
A: at this stage, solely Windows Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit have been put through their paces. Thus in combination with 3 of the biggest host applications available (in their most recent version), namely Cubase 5.1, Sonar 8.5 and Reaper 3.1
Q: hum, my host is not one of these, so I can’t use your 64 bit then?
A: no. Again, this is just a shortlist of the environments that were tested to the extend that we are satisfied with. If you are running Windows XP 64 bit or an unlisted (64 bit) host then by all means report your experience – if your host in this particular OS behaves adequately in this environment then you should have no problem.

I had asked Dave Modisette about this but I am not sure i asked the question correctly although he did a perfect job of answering the question I did ask..
So I am planning to put Vista 64 on the DAW computer and run Cubase 5 64 and the interface is 64 bit compatible as well. If I do the default install of what I have, Superior, EZ drummer, Nashville, and Latin Percusiion at this point, which are all 32 bit, then everything I have done so far in the 32 bit software will play on the 64 bit version of the software? I am assuming the software listed have all been converted to 64?? I have about 2 dozen song projects and don’t want to not be able to no longer use them. Mainly the drum parts as they were the most time consuming.
Hope this makes sense. Thank you in advance

projects are 100% portable back and forth, so yes to your questions, and this by extension means you can work on different systems running a 32 bit host on one side and a 64 bit host at the other end and go back and forth between them.
That’s assuming the host is the same of course and all 3rd party instruments and effects behave in that manner too.

I’m thinking of moving to a new computer with 64 bit Windows 7 but retain my 32 bit DAW application. Should I use the 32-bit or 64-bit EZDrummer or doesn’t this combination work at all?
