Hi,
I just downloaded the latest EZX Cocktail library updater and when I try to install it I get this error message:
“Error 1305.Error reading from file C:WINDOWSInstaller3cb552.msi. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.”
Can anybody tell me what’s wrong and how to fix this?
I’d appreciate any kind of help.
Thanks,
Lars

It sounds like a Windows Installer issue.
Please check the info in this thread:

Thank you, John.
I will check out the thread you posted a link to.
The strange thing is, though, I only got this error message when I tried to install the EZX cocktail update, all other updates (Superior, EZPlayer, etc.) went fine, nor did I ever get this error message when installing anything else.
Could it still be a Windows Installer issue in this case?
Thanks,
Lars

I re-installed the previous update of EZX Cocktail without any problems, but again the update 124 still gives me the same error message.
I also donwloded the Windows Installer update. But that did not change anything either.
Do I need to uninstall and re-install EZdrummer after updatign the Windows Installer?
If yes, does that mean I need another avtivation code, or can I still use the present activation code?
And will it keep all my MIDI files that I added myself?
Thanks,
Lars

don’t uninstall EZdrummer, that’s almost certain not to help. Are you 100% sure you have extracted the zip file, and are not merely browsing the archive?
Just to clarify, this is on Win XP? what service pack? and what version of Cocktail do you have currently (the changes between 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 are minor and not worth significant efforts).

Thanks, Rogue.
Yes, I am 100% positive that I unzipped the folder first.
I’m running WinXPpro32bit with Service Pack3.
I have the version 1.2.3 of the Cocktail EZX.
Doesn’t the error message I get when trying to install version 1.2.4 indicate that there is something wrong with my OS? Or could it be the Cocktail installer itself that has a bug?
What do you suggest shouls I do?
Thanks,
Lars

hi – apology for the delay getting back to you.
Essentially the error you are getting is independent from the Cocktail updater as far as I can tell. This error, in relation to an OS file, means that while you may not encounter the issue with other MSIs, it’s only a matter of time before you do.
Anyway, what version of the Windows Installer are you running? … you can find out by following the section marked ‘Method 3’ under Resolution in the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651 – follow the advise and install the latest version for your OS (4.5 for XPsp3, at the time of writing).
I also recommend you check the rest of this Microsoft kb, perhaps the answer for you is in there. Let us know if you find what is the cause of the error for you (while fairly generic, it may help someone else at some point).

Hi Rogue,
Thank you very much.
I do have the latest version of the Windows Installer (4.5).
I will read through the KB article and post back if I found a solution to this.

I tried all the suggestions of the MS knowledge base article, nothing helped. 🙁

Since I recently re-installed all my Toontrack stuff, Cocktail included, and did so on the exact same setup as you (XP Pro SP3, 32-bit) — it’s ~probably~ safe to say that it’s not the installer.
After looking through the provided solutions so far, and the unfortunate lack of success, I checked Google…
Quickly ran across this possible cause (a permissions thing)…
http://richardsleegers.blogspot.com/2006/04/error-1305-error-reading-from-file-msi.html
…which is unfortunately, not very well written. A similar support request elsewhere, where the support guy is obviously using that article as reference, might give a little more clarity to the steps you need to take to correct this (if in fact it’s even the problem)…
http://www.technologyquestions.com/technology/windows-xp/299515-error-1305-a.html
…(especially pay attention to the last post, #8 — the instructions on what to do are most clear there). If you get lost, or aren’t certain about what you should or shouldn’t be clicking on, post back and hopefully I can kind of mirror it along with you on my end. (I’m on here semi-sporadically though, so PM me also 🙂 )

Thank you very much for your help.
I read through the articles you posted links to, but I can’t find the option for file sharing in the control panel.
What’s also weird is that I’m the only user of this PC so I AM the administrator, why could there be a permission conflict. This is what I don’t quite get….
But there must be something wrong with permissions indeed, since I wanted to change the stratup programs and services in msconfig and I got a message saying I did not have the administor right to do that. I was like WHAT??!?!? I AM the administor…..
EDIT: I finally found the option for file sharing, and I tried it, but it did not help. Maybe I did something wrong?

My guess is that, as an administrator, you somehow revoked some of your own rights — admins can do that, since they’re admins. 🙂
With the “Simple File Sharing” unchecked via the Control Panel > Folder Options,
here’s what the Security tab looks like for my C: drive (right-click the C: drive, click “Properties”)
(side notes: “Cystem” is the name of my C: drive, “Scarmiglione” is the name of my computer)
I’d like you to double-check that you have the same permissions set for both the “Administrators” and “SYSTEM” account here.
(On my system, “CREATOR OWNER” and “Everyone” only had “Special Permissions” checked and “Users” had “Read & Execute”, “List Folder Contents”, and “Read” checked. None of the Group or User account types had any “Deny” options checked. These, I believe, are all still on the system defaults.)
You might have other group or user account types as well, but I think the important ones in this case are just Administrators and SYSTEM (assuming your admin account is part of the “Administrators” group).
If your permissions vary, I *think* that setting them on the C: drive itself should cascade any changed permissions down to any subfolders by default. You can set up some dummy folders and test all of that if you like. And I think the Advanced tab gives even more fine control over this.
If your permissions are set up the same as shown/described, I would check the permissions settings for “C:WINDOWS” and, if it exists, the “Installer” subfolder. And finally, if it exists (maybe even after attempting the install), the .msi file itself.
Checking to be certain that your user account is in fact part of the Administrators group isn’t a bad idea either.
Rather than going through the Control Panel > User Accounts (which I rarely find helpful), a quick place you can check this is via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
Once open, go to Computer Management > System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Groups
Double-click the Administrators group to bring up it’s description and list of members.
If your personal login is not listed as one of the members, then it’s not a part of the Administrators group.
Here’s my “godprobe” personal user login listed in my Computer Management window…
Disclaimer: this may not be your issue at all! 😀
But at least you have some things to check. 🙂
And like Rogue mentioned previously, the difference between 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 Cocktail may not even be worth worrying about.
Good luck!

Thank you so much for this!
I will look into it when I get back home from work and post back.
I appreciate your help!!!
