I’m having trouble figuring this out so hopefully someone can set me in the right direction.
I’m recording my e-drums into Waveform using EZDrummer Metal! – it works but I’m stuck on getting the double kicks to work properly.
This module has one input for bass drum, so I got a Y adapter (mono 1/4″ male to 2 mono female 1/4″), and plugged the triggers into that. With this setup, one kick was way louder than the other or had a crash cymbal sound. So I went to setup on the module and set the midi notes to match EZDrummer (35 and 36). The sound was weak, with one trigger louder than the other again. I thought by using the Y cable the sounds would be the same, but learned that EXDrummer 3 alternates the bass drum sounds so I get what I get. I don’t mind that but it’s really off sounding.
Then I tried using the ext1 and ext 2 inputs for the triggers. Same problems, so I made sure the midi notes were set in the module. They seemed to be right at 35 and 36. But I’m confused because the midi map in EZD shows one trigger alternating between 34/35 and another using 36. I guess that’s hard coded to give them a naturally different sound?
Then to get them into the DAW, I created a multi output rack in Waveform as per their instruction. That works but I don’t know if I should create a separate track for the second kick as in the EZX. And the sound is still crap for the kicks.
So, because there are so many elements in the chain: Footblaster/module/EZDrummer/WaveformDAW, I can’t figure out which part is set wrong.
Bottom line is I need the 2 triggers to be similar sounding with high velocity for recording purposes. I don’t need a ton of control over them – just that they sound like the ezx.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a way forward? I have older Alesis module that I was going to try next in case it’s the module that’s the problem, but open to all suggestons.
Much appreciated, looking forward to moving past this and start recording!
cheers

There’s no need for a splitter; one input is all you need. EZD will alternate the two kicks, as long as your expansion pack has two kicks.
Thanks – to be clear, I was combining the triggers into a single input on the module. And the ezx does have 2 kick drums.
I forgot to say that originally I was using the mesh head trigger in the bass drum. But because my Trick pedals are offset from the center, the 2 sounds were very different. That’s when I went down the pedal trigger rabbit hole lol. So I’m hearing stay with the single input (with a 2 into 1 adapter) rather than the 2 external inputs, and let EZDrummer alternate the sounds. I’ve tried that but one pedal sounds like crap and the other is good. I made sure the triggers were both set a the right distance so it must be a setting in EZD, or Waveform..
