Has there been a statement from Toontrack yet, if and when we can expect an Apple Silicon native version of SD3?

Would be really nice to get a statement from Toontrack if and when native support for Apple Silicon is to be expected.

I’m using SD3 running in Big Sur with M1. It works but not performs really well. Would be good to know toontrack plans to give it native support for Apple Silicon.

AFAIK, there has been no official statement about Apple Silicon native support but I can imagine that there will be as soon as there is more than one Apple Silicon native host working reliably. ATM there is only Logic, right? All other audio and music apps run via Rosetta 2, to the best of my knowledge.

Yeah, and DAW developers are thinking “I can imagine that there will be as soon as there are more Apple Silicon native VIs and plug-ins working reliably”. 😉

If both sides continue to follow the same mindset, we won’t see any progress in compatibility in several years’ time.

Now there are a couple of hosts which have native M1 support. It’s kind of remarkable when avid changes something, developers are all over it to put in a lot of effort to make just to make things compatible. Of course it’ll perform terribly, unless you fork out more money to buy some external dsp’s. The M1 performs amazing with no outboard gear, the price/performance is actually good for a change. Other developers have put out M1 compatible versions of their plugins even before the M1 macs have hit the shelves. Yet toontrack (among others) don’t seem to care.

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to go ahead and upgrade to Apple Silicon and see what can be done without third party plugins.

After some years of experience I wonder if there really would be a massive difference in the sounds that I really need by just using ones available in Logic Pro 10.6.

May be keep the intel Mac running just in case but it would be a good time to see how good my skills really are, rather than relying on (the hype of) third parties.

    Regards

    Rodney

@John Are there any news regarding native compatibility of Toontrack products with M1 computers? Bitwig Studio 4 is now running natively on Apple Silicon machines and Reaper has released a very stable public beta weeks ago.

    Hi sveje77,

I don’t think there has been any official statement yet about this but as I mentioned earlier, of course Toontrack wouldn’t skip the Apple Silicon native platform. As I’m merely a technical advisor, I wouldn’t dare giving you dates but I would be surprised if it took long, now that we’re seeing more computers and hosts being released.

Apple have just released an M1 native version of EZkeys. I am really happy to see that and hope that EZbass and Superior Drummer 3 will be following soon. 🙂

Hi all, just chiming in to confirm that at least on my setup, m1 16gb ram and 512 ssd Mac mini (libraries stored on external ssd), running superior drummer 3 standalone, through Motu M4, everything works perfectly. In fact so much better than my old windows laptop (i7, 16gb ram Asus). Latency is outstanding (total 1.8 ms on SD3 settings) and no cutouts or interrupts.

    Hi,

I have a 2021 Macbook Pro M1.   I have a MOTU M4.  I installed the MOTU new system extension.  In SD3 standalone version I am not able to set the Audio buffer size to 32.  What might I be doing wrong?

    Thanks!

    Hi John,

could you please post in a separate thread about this? This is an old thread and the subject isn’t connected to your issue.
