Hello all!
first off, thanks for your help in advance. I tried to search around the forums to find an answer to my questions before posting but couldn’t find it.
I have a Roland VAD504 for a kit, SD3, and use GarageBand to record. I haven’t made the leap to Logic but likely will soon. However, I don’t that would change the answer to my question.
Curious about the optimal workflow to get the highest quality results possible.
So far I have successfully recorded a stereo performance using SD3 as an Audio Unit inside of the DAW.
This worked but it seems like I can’t use the more sophisticated percussion specific mixing and editing tools of SD3 inside of the DAW?
The workflow I would like to apply is this:
1. I want to record my performances to my other tracks
2. Get the stereo drum tracks in the ballpark sound-wise and finish recording the rest of the instrumentation.
3. Once final editing is done I THINK I am supposed to export the individual tracks and (print) them to audio.
My questions:
Workflow for working on recording with SD3 & GarageBand.
Any insight here would be fantastic
Thank you!
Last I checked you can’t route SD3 out to Garageband. If you record your midi within SD3 while using it as a plugin in Garageband, you can export audio stems out of SD3 to import back into Garageband to mix. Logic would add the option of routing if you prefer.
If you need a rough stereo track for reference, SD3 provides it by default. Or you could export that as well in the meantime.

So do I have to have both GB and SD3 record simultaneously to make that work?
I’m not quite understanding how the AU works once I’ve recorded my drum take in GB.
i have the MIDI in GB but not SD3 it seems. But the sounds are being generated by SD3 (same as any AU instrument).
Thanks for the reply!
No prob.
If GB see’s your ekit and can record midi, it should pass it through to SD. With that said…
Load SD3 as a AU plugin in GB, do not record enable the track.
Open SD3, record enable in SD3 (near the play button).
Hit space bar to play GB and midi will record in to SD3.
No audio has been recorded, yet SD3 is playing in stereo with your song.
Mix time? Use the Track menu in SD3 to export stems, unless you have tempo changes.
I’m not a GB user, but I might be able to answer more than this.

Interesting.
when I play back the track it’ll play back SD3 tracks simultaneously?
ill give that a try, but still not quite understanding.
Seems as though the midi should be “read” by the AU but recorded in the DAW?
probably a dummy but it seems there’s not a lot of documentation on using an EDrum kit with SD3 for recording and the methods and best practices used.
that seems like the primary function.
if anyone knows of some good how-to resources for this stuff that would be great!
I’m telling you the industry standard of all DAWs.
You can record the midi into GarageBand instead, but due to it’s limitations for mixing (unlike Logic and every other DAW), I suggest what’s in my previous post to record into SD3.
What I’m telling you is common, unless you have low computer specs and your computer can’t play superior drummer in real-time.
If I was wrong, the Toontrack mods would have taken over the discussion. Dive in 😉

What’s crazy is there is no top video result on YouTube for exactly this. I’ll make one later if I have time today. If you’re patient, wait for it. If not, I gave you step by step instructions above.

Right?
Seems strange that this topic hasn’t been explored much on YouTube.
I’ll definitely watch and subscribe!
Thank you!
So I’ve deciding to give this video to a certain group. I will leave it unlisted for a few days for you though so you have a chance to check out my workflow in GB. Which is the same as any DAW, just working around a few limitations. Hope it helps…
