Mine sounds more like snare in the middle and hat slightly to the side. How much do you know about miking a kit? Most OH – overhead – miking is done stereo, with a matched pair of mics. Forgive me if I’m telling you what you already know.

What you might be hearing is early reflections depending on the room (you didn’t specify) causing a Haas effect giving the impression that the kit piece is panned.

Thanks for the replies so far. I am using the original mix on the tight room setting. I’ve exported the mic to an actual audio file and made a screenshot of the waveform. You can clearly see a volume difference between the left and right channels when the kick and snare hits. I’ve also added an audio example.

That’s pretty much representing the natural placement of the instrument within the two overhead microphones. The snare is not going to be dead center in a stereo overhead, considering that it is closer to one microphone. The same will go for other kit pieces under a stereo overhead.
