Hi, I have one little (stupid) query I am sure you guys can help me with easily.

I have downloaded Protools Artist (never used PT before) to use for the first time with SD3  (also using eDRUMin module as my main module on a Roland e-kit).

I have set up the drums to play separately on each instrument channel in PT and that is fine (everything is coming across).

However, when I  actually play my e-kit there “is activity” on my EDRUMin module (i.e. the module reacts to me playing but “no” physically reaction coming from SD3 i.e. when I physically hit the kit there is no movement on the SD3 screen.

I have been using Logic prior to this and it works absolutely fine – what am I doing wrong here – I guess I am missing an output issue (sorry very new to PT)

    Superior Drummer 3 version: 3.4.1
    Operating system: macOS Sonoma (14)

Is the track that SD3 is instantiated on record armed?

Go to the View menu in PT and have the Edit screen show ‘Instruments’. Check that the MIDI input for the PT track you have SD3 on is set for SD3. Sometimes PT doesn’t get the assignment right. What I would do in your case being a newbie to PT is to just instantiate an instrument track in PT and put an instance of SD3 on there and then play your ekit. It’s always best when troubleshooting to strip things down to the bare minimum. Also check your computer is really seeing the MIDI output of your drum brain by looking at Audio/MIDI setup in MacOS.

Actually the first thing I would do is to open SD3 standalone and see if it works with your ekit.

Hi, many thanks for the replies! Still not working I am afraid…

I have doubled checked everything and it’s still not playing through PT.

SD3 is is working as a standalone and it also works seamlessly with LP

I have made a small vid that clearly show what is happening. However, I cannot upload other here.

Is there a way of showing anyone this vid on here? It may just crack the code if someone see it?

Just post a screen print of the track SD3 instantiated on for starters.

For videos, if you don’t have a YouTube account, try Dropbox and post  link to it here.

Did you do what I wrote and put SD3 on a single instrument track without any fancy routing? Did you also check what I wrote?

As far as I can tell from the video, you haven’t record enabled the track that superior drummer is inserted on.

    Hi,

I am not 100% sure if Artist behaves the same as Ultimate but you need to Record-arm the Instrument Track or put it in Input Monitoring. Screenshot-2025-11-06-at-21.01.30
In PT Ultimate, there is a Preference that lets Input Monitoring follow the last selected Instrument Track.

    John

Thanks John, I couldn’t screenshot as I have let my PT license go… 😉

I don’t all this talk about record arming an instrument track etc. to get a response from SD3 but in PT2021.6 with SD3 (mixer set for stereo output) on an instrument track and it’s output routed to either an aux track or main out I don’t need to record enable anything to get reaction and sound from SD3. It’s only if that instrument track with SD3 is routed to an audio track. And even if I don’t record arm an audio track if it’s input is the track SD3 is on I still see action going on in the drum page of SD3. The way the OP worded his problem was that he’s seeing on response in the SD3 drum page.

    OK guys problem solved –

I stuck IM on and it worked.

With Logic Pro, you do not need to do that and I just assumed it was some sort of routing issue.

PT is not very intuitive to be honest. I only want to use it sparingly.

Every day is a school day – many thanks for all your input and feedback it was greatly appreciated!

Forums are such a fountain of knowledge when you are stuck!

Did you try anything I wrote to try? Start out simple with SD3 by it’s lonesome on an instrument track and go from there. You don’t need any input monitoring or record arming to get audio out from SD3 (at least not in PT 2021.6). For further questions on all things PT I’d suggest a couple of things: head on over to the DUC forum at  https://duc.avid.com/ which is an excellent source for info on PT. I’ve spent countless hours over the decades there helping out people. My screenname there is musicman691. The other is to check out videos on YouTube for free stuff and Groove 3 for paid for videos.
