Copying a post I tried in the EZDrummer DAW forum but got no responses, figured I’d try on this one too.
I’ve just installed both Reaper and EZDrummer, so I’m new to both. I think the versions are 4.5x and 1.3x respectively. After pointing Reaper to the VST plugin, I added a new track and used the FX button to open EZ Drummer. After authorizing, I tried to play some of the grooves just within the EZD window by selecting them and pressing the play button. I’m not getting any audio. However, if I drag the groove into the track and then play it in Reaper I can hear it. I could be wrong but I think I’m supposed to be able to audition the grooves from just the EZD window before dragging them into the track. I tried checking around the EZD window for an audio configuration menu of some kind but didn’t seem to find any.
Also, the EZ Drummer window itself is rather small – is there a way to increase its size? I tried clicking and dragging on a corner to see if it would “stretch” but it just moved around the screen. Is there a config file or something where the size of the window is defined and could be edited?
Thanks
Do you get sound if you click any of the drums in the
GUI of EZdrummer?

The way I load EZdrummer in Reaper:
– Click ‘Track’ in Reaper
– Click ‘Insert Virtual Instrument on new track’
– Click ‘Instrument’ in far left column (should be already selected)
– Click ‘VSTi: DFH Sampler (Toontrack) (16 out)’
– Click ‘OK’
– A pop up menu will load and ask if you want Reaper to build 16 outputs. For now click ‘Cancel’ instead of ‘OK’. This will get you started.
– EZdrummer will open
All routing should work and you should be able to audition grooves from the browser.
And no, the EZdrummer interface in not resizable.

I got this when I first got Superior Drummer and it drove me nuts finding it. You need an option checked in REAPER Prefs to run plugins when the transport is stopped.
Not in front of REAPER, but I’ll post details when I am if you’ve not found it. Probably in Prefs/plugins or similar?

Thanks for the responses. I haven’t had the opportunity to go back and try it yet but I will post results when I do.
Hmm, well it’s better but still seems kind of odd. I added a track and then did the “add virtual instrument” steps. I was able to “play” the virtual kit, and audition the grooves from the EZD window. I went with the 8 output setup, so it created 8 tracks in Reaper. Then I tried dragging the groove into Reaper, but it only put the groove onto 1 track. Maybe my expectations are wrong, but I thought using the multi-out it would separate the kit pieces onto their own tracks – snare, kick, and hi-hats? Or is there something else I have to do to “assign” each piece to it’s own track?
The other thing is that once I did that, I couldn’t get sound from the EZ Drummer window again. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. I’m using Reaper 64 bit, and EZ Drummer said it was in “bridged” mode or something like that, which I think is OK(?).
Sorry for having such noob questions, I’ve never worked with a MIDI based and multi output drum app before. Just trying to get my head around it, I’m sure it’s easy once the basics get sorted out.
Thanks
That sounds like you’re running a 32-bit version of EZD in a 64-bit version of REAPER.
Your groove is a MIDI section that will drag into a REAPER track. Different notes in that MIDI item correspond to different instruments or articulations of instruments (eg centre snare, rimshot snare, sidestick). The multiple audio outputs from EZD that are sent to your REAPER tracks are single or combined microphone channels from the original EZD session. So, MIDI in to play the different kit instruments (drums, cymbals), audio out from the recording session mics.
Incidentally if you’ve built your multiple tracks out for EZD and it’s still outputting all audio on just the one track, you probably need to set the EZD mixer’s plugin output channels to match the sends in REAPER’s routing.
Hope that made sense…

Bridged mode is not supported, especially not since there is a 64-bit version. Make sure you have downloaded the 64-bit update and that Reaper picks it up in its VST scan.

Ok, I downloaded and ran the 1.3.3 update and ran the 32 bit then 64 bit patches. I think it’s all fixed now – it doesn’t display the bridged mode anymore and seems to be OK switching between the EZ drummer window and Reaper OK. I have to find some time to dig into and really get familiar with both, but for the moment I think I’ve got it set up correctly. Thanks for the help.
