Hi everyone,
I finally got the chance to try EZD3 for a little while earlier today. I’m really impressed. I did not expect this many changes. Anyways, my favorite out of all the new features is the updates to humanization in the grid editor. I got excellent results with almost everything that I ended up programming. However, there were a few songs that didn’t turn out right.
I don’t expect this feature to be perfect. I just mean that some of my results were so off the mark, I started thinking maybe I was making a mistake. All that songs that it worked for really well were really loud punk rock songs. And they were all fast, averaging at around 180 BPM.
But then I tried to work on a few other genres, and the results were totally unusable. It wasn’t even a good starting point for me to just tweak things a bit and be satisfied. For example, I was working on some songs that are inspired by dub, reggae, rocksteady, etc… Dynamics are so essential for this, and so I was excited to see how it would sound. The biggest problem was anytime I tried to use the “soft” velocity style. Things ewre getting turned down to like 10 or less velocity. But this is ridiculous. It was nearly imperceptible. There were a lot of little hi hat techniques that make full use of the pedals (lots of splashes and chicks and chokes and whatnot). But it was so stupidly quiet. LIke, I increased the velocity by 40-60, and it still was quiet haha….
What happened? Is this the way the algorithm is supposed to work? Because I can’t imagine anyone would ever find it useful to workin within a velocity range of about 1-15. Right? As far as I know, NOBODY would ever do this.
I’ve looked at the velocities in drum tracks made by live drummers. There is a wide range within them. Do you have any badly humanised tracks for us to hear?
Thanks for replying.
I guess looking at the velocities of a live drummer would be the best way to assess what is typical. Unfortunately, I only have EZD2. I was using EZD3 at a friend’s house, so I don’t have access to the midi files I was working with yesterday. I’ll try to get some links for us to look at.
