Hi there,
Using as a good finger drumming controller for Toontrack Superior Drummer, is the NI Maschine Mikro mk3 sufficient, or do I need the NI Maschine mk3?
As far as I could see the difference would be that the bigger Maschine has sounds and sampling functionality, which I don’t think I need.
Although, maybe good to know, I also do have all NI Komplete Ultimate 12.
Thank you for your input.
Best,
RGH
It really all depends on how you intend to use it. The larger Maschine is a more suitable for live and on the fly type of performances, as the knobs and buttons can be configured to manipulate macros and perhaps some mixer channel buttons. The larger one also allows easy switching between pad groups on the fly, which can be extremely handy for changing hi-hat articulations or substituting a different type of power hand without having to learn a whole different pad layout for it. Switching can be done on the Mikro but it is more of a two-handed move (doesn’t mean that it cannot be mastered, however).
sounds and sampling are common to both models. Main difference is their methodology in that the larger unit has an audio interface and the Mikro will use samples obtained by the software. I wouldn’t discount those features as far as SD3’s concerned, as I find that I am often creating sounds to stack on top of my kits.

Thank you for your reply!
I will use it just in my studio for laying down drum tracks. Instead of playing on a keyboard, using the finger pads seems more convenient to me. It seems to me that the Mikro is then more suitable.

The Mikro suits most needs. I have both, and I find that I get away with doing most of my drum programming on the Mikro.

I use an Akai MPD218, it works fine and has an editor for different kits, you can pick them up cheap second hand £35 – 40
