Hi
I would prefer to have SD3 multichannel outputs come up in Pro Tools and mix from the mixer there rather than mix the drums in SD3. I have no problems setting this up in SD3 and getting this to work however it does not sound the same as when the mix is done in SD3. I have tried a number of SD3 presets as a starting point to compare the difference between the Stereo output and mixing in Pro Tools.
I am aware that some of the preset have FX on Bus 1/2 and so have been careful to remove them from what becomes the Kick output 1/2 and recreate them as far as possible on the Drum Bus in Pro Tools. But there appears to be a fundamental difference in sound that might be related to a difference in phase using the multichannel outputs.
Has anyone had this problem.
The mix sound more open in SD3 and the stereo image changes when switching to mutlichannel output. I have tested this fairly well. Some of the presets only have the Fairchild 670 compressor on the stereo bus. If I put a 670 on the Drum Bus with similar settings it still sounds different.
I’ve experienced the same with Logic and am interested in others’ suggestions on this as well.
If you are experiencing any type of sonic difference with no effects on the output bus of both SD3 and your DAW, then you have some sort of latency issue in your DAW. Don’t know how it is in PT but in Logic it is best to set the plug-in delay compensation to “All” when mixing (you can create a key command to toggle this). I’m using multiple outputs all the time and am not experiencing this issue.
As far as plug-Ins such as the 670 go, those are as different as the companies that develop them. If anything, as nice as the one in SD3 is, it is nowhere near the same as UAD’s Fairchild emulation in all respects. Trying to match the settings visually will more than likely produce different results. It is best to just use your ears. However, expect sonic differences due to their emulations.
