Does anyone have a better preset for the Rush Moving Pictures drum sound? I have the recreationmix one but it leaves more to be desired. Looking for some help with getting a better match to the snare sound. If anyone has one they can share, please let me know. Or at least can provide some pointers and a starting point. My libraries are:
Core
Death and Darkness
Modern Metal EZX
Legacy of Rock
Fields of Rock
Progressive Foundary
Also, Signals or any other Rush drum sound you might have
What would help is having the drums Neil used. Here’s a link to what he used on Moving Pictures: http://andrewolson.com/Neil_Peart/drums/drumkits/moving_pictures.htm
And here’s a link to the parent site which has album cover pictures of the Rush albums. Click on a cover to go to the page that lists what Neil used on what: http://andrewolson.com/Neil_Peart/drums/drumkits/drums_history.htm
On both albums Neil used what he called ‘Old Faithful’ which is a 5.5×14 Slingerland Artist Model snare with candy apple red finish, a 3 ply shell and 8 lugs. Interesting that his drum tech was not Lorne Weaton but Larry Allen.

But I don’t think there is a snare in SD3 in any library matching that snare. The whole point is to try to find something that closely resembles it. Was hoping someone out there might have a preset they can share as this is a pretty darn popular album for Rush. Not sure where I would even begin to mimic that sound especially since no library would appear to have a Slingerland Artist Model snare with candy apple red finish, a 3 ply shell and 8 lugs. LOL
If you’re trying to copy the snare sound on those two albums you are SOL until you find that exact snare (and the heads that were used). And the rest of the chain that was in use. Even for me being a huge Neil Peart fan I would go with the snare he used in his DW kits rather than try and copy something from an album. But try and find a wood DW snare in an SDX – I seem to remember one but not the SDX it was in. Would love to have a complete wood DW kit from say the Time Machine or Clockwork Angels tours. There is a DW wood kit in D&D which I use to cover Rush stuff but the snare is metal though. I am NOT buying an SDX just to get a wood DW snare.

Would it be possible for you to share your preset or project file that has your ‘rush’ cover stuff in it? I have D&D. Would be curious to see what your’s sounds like.
If you can get the basic tone from one of your snares then you came tune it up or down to get that part, make sure you try the rim shots as well as that’s what he played. Also you can change the envelope settings to cut shorter. Then there are all the effects in sd3 like compression and eq. With all I’ve mentioned you should be able to get the sound you want.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

As I’ve mentioned I don’t use any effects or do any mixing in SD3. I use multi-out in SD3. I do do groups of kit pieces like rack toms to one SD3 mixer channel, rack toms to another, etc. and thence onto separate aux tracks in ProTools which when I want to render to audio they get sent to individual audio tracks. In PT I do cut unnecessary lows on the rack and floor toms with an EQ in PT (SPL PQ-EQ from Plugin Alliance). I then group all the PT tracks to an aux track that has the Purple Audio MC77 from Plugin Alliance. Then I do a send to my drum verb (Liquidsonics Lustrous Plates) and that goes to another aux track to be summed with that first aux track. I do it that way so I can drop the drums out without having to worry about anything. Sprinkled in there are the SSL X-Limit to catch overs (I set it to -.5dB). I end up with 23 tracks in all in PT which are a mix of aux and audio tracks.
I tend to go more for a live sound with Rush stuff.

Believe it or not, I found that the Slingerland Professional 1930s Single Ply wood snare from legacy of Rock fits the mold of the moving pictures snare sound pretty well. I bumped up the pitch a tiny bit and loaded it under the core library default. For the toms, I loaded the black dw maples from D&D. Of course got rotos in there as well. Will likely tweak a bit in the mixer but even as is, it’s much better than the crap preset I was using. Sounds more natural and not overly processed. I’m not looking for a perfect match, just something close enough to be fun to play. Was reminded, I forgot several parts of Red Barchetta as it’s been a long time since I new those parts. But now that I have the ability to load stems of my fav songs, it will no doubt make me a better player. nice to be able to turn the drums on and off as needed. On to re-learn the parts or try to match the sound. Off to play along (and dare to replace the great Neil Peart. LOL)
Glad you got it figured out. There’s no way to replace The Professor. Sure hope that Annika Nilles can get the job done. She’s going to need to change her rack tom setup as from what I’ve seen of her playing she only has 2 of them. And as we all know Neil has 4. That’s my problem with D&D – the 4th has to be added as an x-drum and repitched to fit in. Area 33 can get that done but the drums are way different.
I not all that enthused with the presets in SD3 core or any of the SDX’s I have – that’s why I do it all in ProTools. Let’s me process to taste with tools I know very well. My favorite drum bus compressor is that Purple Audio MC77 I mentioned. Does not mess with the snap of the high end like an API would (or any other 1173 clone I’ve tried).
BTW on January 6 it will be 6 years that Neil has left us. Got to get a bottle of Macallan Scotch to remember him with. He loved that stuff.

RIP Neal. So many drummers were influenced by him. While you might find plenty of drummers out there that are faster etc. but he had a way of playing his kits in way that was musical and melodic. He was the best at incorporating his playing into the songs that was part of the musical experience more than any drummer I have heard. But then the solos were always done at the appropriate juncture of the song. He didn’t overplay but he certainly didn’t under-play either. Just the right balance. Sux he left us too soon.
As for Miss Nilles, she is in a class all her own. She is not trying to replace Neal. She will have her own flavor added to the songs. We have to realize she is not going to sound like Peart. Nor should we expect her to. She is going to sound like Anika Nilles playing her own take on Rush Songs. And I’m OK with that. I don’t want someone else trying to sound like Neal. It just would not feel right IMHO. She is super talented and professional. I’m going to one of the Philadelphia shows in August and can’t wait. I’m not expecting it to be a classic rush concert like the old days. But I expect it will be a good show still with great musicianship. While the boys are older and Geddy does not have the vocals he once had, they have always set the bar high for themselves and would not tour if they couldn’t put on a show that makes people smile. I’m sure it will be an enjoyable concert. Better be for over $1200 for 3 tickets! LOL

Thanked by: drumjack52Where in Philly are they playing? I’m in Trenton NJ and if tickets are available I’d be in on that.

Thanked by: drumjack52Thanks much. Now to convince the wife. Hope their sound is better than other concerts I’ve been to in a hockey arena. Celtic Woman here in Trenton and the sound was awful. What wasn’t helping was that the board jockey had all the levels in the red.
