Mono Outputs?

    Hi,

I wouldn’t say there is something that needs to be “fixed”.
The plug-in needs to tell the host how its outputs are configured upon scanning/loading, i.e. nothing that can be changed on-the-fly.
If, instead of the 16 Stereo channels broadcasted to the host, were a set number of Mono outputs as well, how would you propose they would be distributed? 10 Stereo + 12 Mono channels? 6 Stereo + 20 Mono channels?

Since no SDX or EZX has exactly the same setup in terms of microphones, having a set number of Mono outputs would be more limiting and we would see posts with questions like: “How do I combine 2 Mono outputs to a Stereo output?”
If memory serves me, in the very early days, with the first Superior Drummer plug-in, this became very clear when the second library was released (the 1st iteration of Custom & Vintage), since you had to load the plug-in and re-configure, close it and re-start your host and re-scan the plug-in.

The best way is as user Jord suggests; to set up a Template in your host and with Project files in SD3.
Regarding the Pro Tools routing and Kicks in the post above: you do not need to have your Kick channel(s) routed to output 1/2. You can have any Stereo microphone output on the Stereo Instrument Track where SD3 is inserted, e.g. the AMB.

Sounds like there’s no good way to address this with the way SD3 has been recorded & designed along the way. What a competitor did was keep the recording of libraries consistent. This obviously would’ve restricted the producers of the different SDXs though.

Personally I find SD3 great less the disconnect between the MIDI in & out mappings. Though I’ve purchased a handful of EZXs, the all-stereo routing and inconsistencies in SDXs has curbed my purchases of them. Yet I still have all the sounds I need between the drum VIs I have. So all is well.

In addition to the mono outputs, SD3 is also lacking 1 output if one wishes to mix the entire mic collection exclusively in the DAW. Recently, I mixed a 7.1.4ch mix, and besides using the pan to get mono out, I had to combine two mics in the SD3 mixer (surround Fronts with Center) before sending out to a stereo channel. It’s not a huge deal, but it is odd that a program recorded with 33 microphones would not allow all the channels to be routed out of the program at once.

Maybe if mono outputs is too cumbersome to implement,  it would be wise to increase the outs to 64 channels (32 stereo) thus allowing every microphone to be routed out without mixing in the program.

I agree, at least increase the stereo outs to 32 or make a way to add your own mono or stereo ins and outs for DAW’s.  I have Studio One 6 and am limited to max of 16 stereo channels for any kit I select without any way to add ins or outs. I have kits with 32 pieces I created in SD3 and Pro tools and have to combine channels for Studio One. This should be an update before they put out the next version of Superior Drummer- SD4!!! It should have been seen and fixed with SD3!!! I also use Pro Tools and they seem to have no problem adding inputs in the console in the DAW. AAX vs VST? Toontrack needs to get with DAW’s that use VST’s and get this limitation resolved , it’s 2022 now. Kind of like the master fader and meters still not working in control surfaces due to outdated limited codes.

It seems like keeping the existing stereo outs and adding a mono out option for the shells (kick, snare, Tom’s) would be a great place start and would replicate the mic setup of a vast majority of studio drum mic set ups. Thanks and Happy New Year all!

I guessed it was not a simple task otherwise you would of done it by now.

I will be using the 32 mono outs going forward as I am a Cubase user.

I love SD3 though still, keep up the good work!

thanks for your replies & sorry to bring it up again 😱🤩

When I record drums, I use mono mics. I only use stereo tracks for room. Why oh why can’t Toontrack provide an option for mono outputs? It seems so simple!

    Hi John Baker Baker,

may I suggest you search the forum and also read the replies in this thread?

There IS a reason why it works the way it does right now.

It’s not simple. The Toontrack guys are doing a fine job getting these samples down.
