i’ve owned EZD 2 and SD 2 for a number of years. originally i used them on windows and then re-downloaded and re-authorized the plugins on a mac about 2 years ago but when i did that, i believe i already somehow pointed the software to use the existing soundsets / samples in a rather non-standard location.
anyway, i took about a two year hiatus from recording and now i’m jumping back in. my daw of choice is the latest Studio One Pro 3.5+. i checked online and there was an EZD 2 update, so i downloaded that and it installed fine. EZD and SD both see all my aftermarket EZX expansion and SDx kits and they play fine. so the software is updated and working fine.
i then tried to start using and familiarize myself with the midi file browser and in the process located the actual folders on my mac to see how the underlying files were organized. it took me awhile to kind of figure out how the filenaming conventions of the folders and files somehow translate to how things are displayed in the EZD file browser but i have a few midi questions now…
1) i’d like to know if toontrack has a document that explains what the naming conventions are of their midi packs so i don’t have to guess?
…b/c i’m thinking about reorganizing my midi and as it stands right now, due to the way toontrack named the files, what you see in the mac filesystem when SORTED CHRONOLOGICALLY IN THE MAC FINDER doesn’t translate to the order in the midi browser! in other words, the mac finder and toontrack use a different sort algorithm on the filenames!? 🙂
2) do i risk future midi pack installs / update problems if i start changing the names and organizing them the way i want?
3) finally, when i go into Menu > Settings > MIDI Libraries, i don’t actually see the PARENT folder listed there that contains all the EZX and stock EZD 2 & SD2 midi files?!! for some reason it looks like i specified two CHILD folders of that immediate parent folder in this path configuration 2 years ago when i set this up but the actual PARENT path where 90% of the midi pack files are is not listed at all. yet all of these midi show up in my EZD browser?!! since this parent folder is a custom location i defined a long time ago and not tied to any standard EZD / SD standard install directory location, it must be configured somewhere. so how does EZD / SD know where to find this parent directory? is it configured somewhere else outside of the MIDI Library paths config and if so where? b/c as i said, the directory is NOT listed in the MIDI Libraries configuration?!
sorry for the long question just trying to be clear…
Hi,
1) No. Probably because you’re not supposed to change anything in the underlying ‘EZDrummer/Midi’ structure, because…
2) Yes, it absolutely breaks updates and most likely will break operability. E.g. some folders are Headers, others are sub-headers others contain actual MIDI files, etc.
3) Normally, all Toontrack MIDI (if correctly installed) shows up automatically in the plugin Browsers. This has to do with the system wide ‘EZHOME’ setting and it is normally set to a Default location upon installing either EZdrummer 2 or Superior 2. In the Settings you can decide whether 3rd party and User added folders should be included in Searches or not. You can also add a folder outside the Toontrack structure, Open an added folder in the Finder/Explorer and Sync file changes in an added folder. If a folder is not mounted/added in the Browser, it should not be one of the options in the add to Search Setting.
I hope this clarifies,

hey john. yeah i sort of ascertained that the midi root was set by teh first install of a given toontrack base product. then after that it’s fixed in an underlying config as EZHOME until you move the folder (whereupon it forces you to choose the new location) or you reinstall and reset it.
fwiw, i haven’t touched those midi files at all. i was just trying to figure out where they were on the system and once i found them wondered why toontrack used a different sorting mechanism than macos finder which made making a one to one comparison difficult. so regarding my other post, i’m not sure i did anything to the midi files that is messing with the install of the packages. i was basically poking around in my filesystem to check to see what midi files are actually there.
the install of these midi files has always been somewhat of a black box. at least for me. when you’re away from the toontrack products / daw for awhile and come back to resume and then update, i’ve always found it to be extremely confusing. the pkg names are often cryptic so you’re not really sure what you’re downloading. i never really know if i actually even have all the midi files that come with a given package installed or not. maybe with the new install manager it’s different but with the old online system, i *believe* the minute you downloaded the package toontrack assumed that the midi package was installed successfully which isn’t always true. i know that’s exactly what happened this time. having to always reinstall the full package after old interim updates get rolled into the full package periodically but also having interim package updates until that happens is sort of confusing. it would almost be better to only have one full install package and always keep that updated. just my two cents but maybe my assumptions are incorrect about how the packages are rolled out.
thx as usual for the info
