I’m not sure if this is a SD3 issue or a Cubase issue or just me not understanding what information a MIDI file contains but here goes.
If I use SD3 as a VST in an Instrument Track in Cubase, create MIDI in the SD3 Song Track and then export it (or drag it) into that Track as MIDI, no problem works great. However if I want to bring that MIDI back into the Song Track to work further on it, the timing of the MIDI once it’s been brought back into the Song Track has changed. That is the MIDI data starts a little behind where it was and over time delays more over each bar so that it can no longer play simultaneously over the other tracks in Cubase. The Song Track is using Follow Host for the time signature and tempo. And on the prompt for the import back into the Song Track I’ve tried ticking and unticking the Tempo checkbox but with the same results.
This means I can work with the MIDI within Cubase once it’s been brought in but I have to keep it there as I can no longer import it back into SD3.
But I’m curious if anyone has come up against this between the two applications and why it might occur. It doesn’t make any sense but this is a consistent result if I try to use this workflow.
Again it is more of a nuisance than anything else but I can’t figure out why this happens. TIA.
I use Cubase but do all midi in Cubase and not SD3. What is the reason to put midi back into SD3 after putting it in Cubase? I find it much easier to work in Cubase with the drum editor as I’ve used it for years. Because of this I never have a problem. Sorry I can’t answer your question. Maybe someone else can.

Thanked by: kemccarthy1I do the same as Mark. I do all my editing in Cubase as well. Having said that:
If you have time signature changes in Cubase and do not duplicate them in SD3, then your measure numbers in SD3 won’t match in Cubase. This is one of the main reasons I do all of my drum editing in Cubase. I just found it very difficult to try to keep the two entities matched in bars and beats. So this could be the cause of the timing not matching up between the two if you are dragging MIDI to a matching bar/beat from Cubase to SD3.

Thanked by: kemccarthy1Thanks guys,
tl;dr
I’ve become addicted to using the Song Track in SD3 and grab MIDI Grooves from the Packs I’ve purchased to combine as a complete track while auditioning the rest of the ensemble playing in Cubase. The Grid Editor has tools I’ve been using that help a lot especially on a global basis but it is not nearly as granular or useful as Cubase’s Drum Editor for sure.
*The nice benefit the Grid Editor is that it neatly shows the various drums and articulations in the current Library as opposed to the Drum Editor where I have to mark up each library I use in SD3. I’ve downloaded a Drum Map from somewhere online that corresponds to the Default SD3 library pretty closely but it would be such a nice feature in SD3 to have a simple method to output a drum map from every library I have to import into Cubase.*
When I’ve made my track I’ll drag it into Cubase and work from there but sometimes I’ve wanted to drag the MIDI back into SD3 and do some more work with Grooves.
This is where I’ve run into the problem that the MIDI I’ve dragged back into the Song Track no longer synchronizes with the Cubase playback in that it progressively falls further behind as the track progresses. I appreciate your workflow suggestions and it’s probably the most efficient way to go but it still boggles my mind exactly why this happens even with Follow Host enabled and all.
Just curious why this would be.
Thanks again.
If SD3 is gradually falling farther out of sync with your host, (Cubase) make sure that you are using “Follow Host” in SD3.
Over the years I have created an collected a bunch of EZX and SDX drum maps for Cubase. I’m happy to share them at the link below. All I ask is that if you find any mistakes, let me know so I can correct them.

Thanks, yes I am using Follow Host.
And thanks for the Drum Maps, very generous of you. They’ll be put to good use, I assure you.
for the Drum Maps.
