I want to use the midi editor. I really do. There are lots of little features that were specifically included to make programming drums easier. And those features work well. And I’m glad to see that there are more humanization options in ezd3, similar to what is available in sd3.
And so.. maybe someone can offer some suggestions. I don’t think there’s a way to “fix” the issue that I have, because technically, everything is working as intended. I don’t understand how every component of the midi editor can be so stellar, except for what is probably the most basic component that you find in every midi editor that I know of. I am talking about the transport controls. What a nightmare. Not only are they awful, they are the absolute worst compared to anything else that exists. Obviously, I haven’t tried everything else that exists, but it would be incredibly challenging to design a software that has transport controls more ridiculous than this.
As I mentioned, everything else about the midi editor is ideal. I can’t think of anything else I would change. It’s not just me. There was a thread on reddit and over a dozen users have the same experience. And the sad part is that this one component is so important. Because it is so bad, the midi editor becomes completely impractical. So no one uses it. It’s a real shame, since I can tell a lot of work went into making this editor exceptional. All I am saying is that this is really simple: if the transport controls in the midi editor worked just like the transport controls in most DAWs, then there would be nothing to complain about. But as of now, I can’t even get the playhead to start where I want it to start. Why cant I just click anywhere on the timeline, push play on my midi transport controller, and have the playback start at the same place where I JUST PUT THE PLAYHEAD. This makes no sense. I’ve been using the software for 3 years, and I still don’t understand these terrible transport controls.
You keep saying they, as in plural. Is it just your last sentence that is the issue?
Spacebar is tethered to your DAW for playback which makes great sense since most want playback in their DAW while they work in EZ. If you can get use to holding control before hitting spacebar, you can now not trigger your DAW while editing in Grid Editor, and pausing too.
That’s the best I can think of. I’m not sure what other virtual Instrument do not operate this way. I think the best bet if for you to get use to the extra key command, you’ll get use to it pretty quickly.
Also set up a loop area in your daw to keep you confined to the portion of your song that you’re editing. Or set up a Loop in EZ to the beat you’re working on, so when you DAW continues playing it’s song structure beyond your loop, you can still work and be focused on your loop.
Also, you can deselect Follow Host, change your keyboard shortcut to just “spacebar” for “playback”, and use EZ as I assume you’re hoping for. Simply reengage Follow Host to get you DAW back in the game.
Hope any of this helps your workflow.

I guess the first thing I would ask is, which DAW are you working in. @shootie has some good suggestions as usual.
Mac Studio M1 Max, RAM 64 GB, 1TB Drive, OSX 12.x/13.x and Windows 10 (VM)
DAW: Studio One Pro (always up to date)
DTX Express III (Extreme triggers), Nektar LX88
OWC Thunderbay Mini (4 X 1TB Sata SSD), Express 4M2 (4 X 2TB M.2 SSD), Envoy Express (1TB M.2 SSD)
Presonus Quantum, Faderport & Faderport 8
Black Lion Sparrow Mk2 A/D, FMR-RNP-RNC, MIDI Xpress 128, BM5A, KRK VXT4, Equator D5
2020 Macbook Pro 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD Audio(mobile rig)

Thanked by: ShootieIf you can get use to holding control before hitting spacebar, you can now not trigger your DAW while editing in Grid Editor, and pausing too.
Or Shift+Spacebar for regular Play/Stop, return of playhead.

Nice… I missed that!

I agree. Â If it just did some basic things like a typical DAW MIDI editor then it would be useful.
