Currently, SD3 can apply filters to incoming midi notes based on the midi channel. Ie. one can choose a specific channel to process (ignoring all others) or process all channels (through a linked setting in either the “Midi In” config or the “Midi setup” config in standalone). I’m assuming the same filter likely exists in most/all DAWs for an SD3 instrument.
Once the notes get through that filter, SD3 ignores the channel attached to a given note, as best as I can tell. I looked briefly at the Midi spec, and it seems that the intent of the spec is to allow multiple modules (midi sources) to be used together by assigning them separate channels. This would imply, in my mind anyway, that the midi note values might overlap, but the modules would be differentiated by the channels. Maybe my interpretation of the spec is wrong, but this is how I read it.
Anyway, I’m curious whether SD3 could ever interpret incoming midi as the combination of channel and note, and not just note (after being filtered by channel). This would effectively expand the total number of note slots available for mapping, and could really help with large kits using instruments with a lot of mapped articulations.
I realize I can handle this with multiple instances of SD3 with channel filters (either standalone or separate tracks in a DAW), but that becomes quite cumbersome to maintain across different presets. So I am trying to understand whether there is some fundamental limitation preventing this, or whether this would make a good wish-list item for next-gen SD.
Thanks!
Hi pumpkinking,
I understand how this – being able to set an instrument/articulation to listen for a note value on a specific MIDI channel – would make things easier for you with more than one module in use but unfortunately it is not how it works in SD3, at least not for now. But it does make a great request for the ‘Requests & Feedback’ section.

John

Thanked by: pumpkinkingHi there folks
My understanding of the midi spec is that “ch 10” is for drums as set out in the original MIDI specifications
after re-reading the post i see that there are two controllers being used. two controllers certainty adds an element of expansion to the equation. I can configure a pad on my “trigger IO” to send on another channel but that would only be useful in a DAW and not in standalone mode.
Cheers Ken
