I completed a complete system makeover going to all 64 bit. This includes the 64 bit version of Steinberg MR816CSX, Cubase 5 and Vista 64. Everything went off without a hitch except for a couple of operator caused hiccups.
The Toontrack software included SD2, EZ Drummer, Nashville EZX and Latin Percussion.
The problem now is with EZ Drummer, Nashville, and LP. I am unable to drag and drop any grooves into the Cubase tracks. Some message pops up but it goes away too fast to read. SD drags and drops just fine. Additionally some projects that had EZ drummer on them from the 32 bit system and play just fine won’t allow me to open the EZD mixer or groove window or do anything with them. I would like to convert the EZD tracks to instrument tracks instead of MIDI.
Is it just me or is something out of kilter? I use the canned beats “grooves” because they serve my purpose just fine.
Thanx in advance.

Try right clicking the cubase icon and selecting ‘run as administrator’ – there have been a few problems with the latest 5.5 update reported at the cubase forums recently, so that would be the first thing I would try.

Damian,
Tried that, didn’t work. I am running the Cubase 5 version out of the box by the way which is 5.01. Removed and reinstalled EZD. In a new project I can add an instrument and select EZ drummer. The edit document icon lights up but no graphic so there is nothing there to drag and drop. On an existing project with EZD tracks this light won’t light up at all. Again everything in SD2 works fine including loading EZD files from the SD2 grooves window and dragging them to tracks. EZD is showing in the VST catalogue in Cubase as is Superior Drummer.
I think I am ready for plan B.
Thanx

I think I figured this problem out. Dave Modisette had warned me I might experience some weirdness doing this conversion and he was right. When I first started using Toontrack products a couple of years ago I was letting the sounds default to the create midi track in Cubase. Then I started seeing on this site about creating instrument tracks. I had been doing this with SD2 and it was working well but in the 32 bit version it would work in either instrument or MIDI. Now they only work in instrument. I got the previous MIDI version in the other projects recorded in the 32 bit version to work by creating some more instrument tracks and dragging the data to the instrument track. When I create an instrument track it asks what VST instrument I want to use, in my case EZD or SD2. So now the edit light lights up and the graphic for EZD, Nashville and Latin Percussion appear. The only other thing is when I transferred the data from the original MIDI track to the instrument track I had to go back in and change those files to Latin Percussion or whatever was originally recorded. So everything seems to be working well both EZD and SD2.
Funny how once you crack one of these mysteries you go Duh!!
I hope this helps anyone else that may have this problem.

So, you’re saying that if you load EZD (or S2) in the VST rack (F11) and route a MIDI track to EZD (or S2) you get no sound? And this is with 64-bit Vista, 64-bit Cubase 5 and 64-bit EZD (or 64-bit S2)?
I really don’t know as I’m using 32-bit versions (EZD/S2, Vista/XP, and Cubase 4).

If I load a blank project in Cubase and select add track (s), my choices are audio, instrument and MIDI.If I click on MIDI the VST instrument rack pops up. If I select EZD it asks if I want to create a MIDI track. If I say yes it creates the track but I can’t load anything into it. If I select Instrument I get a pop up asking to add a VST instrument or no. If I click yes then my choices or Steinberg instrument (Halion and all that stuff I don’t know how to use), SD2 and EZD. If I click on EZD the drum set graphic pops up and life is good. The take away for me is to put the drum sounds on an instrument track.
I don’t try to use MIDI controllers. There are more than enough “grooves” to suit my purposes. Otherwise might as well get an acoustic set and mike them up or get a Roland set. I am not a drummer (always hated that term, prefer percussionist) so this stuff works well for me.

And this is with 64-bit Vista, 64-bit Cubase 5 and 64-bit EZD (or 64-bit S2)?

Yes, I did a total conversion. SD2, EZD , all the latest updates for Nashville and Latin percussion, Cubase 5 ver. 5.01 out of the box, haven’t done the 5.5 upgrade and Vista. Took most of the day Saturday.
Did I do something wrong? Everything seems to be working fine although I am experiencing some cutouts but that might be the Steinberg interface or I need more memory, currently running 4Gb’s.

I can’t comment on Cubase 5 or 64-bit versions of OS/Cubase/S2/EZD because I’m using 32-bit versions and C4. There has been some issues with Toontrack samplers and the Cubase 5.5 upgrade but I haven’t heard of any issues with C5.0.1.

I am starting to think I should have left everything 32 bit but we will see.

Are you sure you are using the 64 bit versions of Superior and ezdrummer? If you go to the instrument rack non native 64 bit versions in the list (ie 32 bit plugins) have an icon next to them – you could also check this in plugin information. It could be that Cubase hasn’t registered your 64 bit plugin path, which is also worth checking.
The other thing I would ensure is that you have installed the 32 bit version of ezdrummer as well as the 64 bit version – the 64 bit installer doesn’t include any of the sounds. Another thing to note is if you have uninstalled the 32 bit version the sounds will have been uninstalled as well.
The original version of the cubase bitbridge which enables you to use 32 bit plugins in a 64 bit host was notoriously problematic. The bitbridge in Cubase 5.5 is much improved, although 5.5 has brought its own problems. It has been ok for me though.
EDIT – reply changed as I see Scott also asked the same thing

The computer has 2 hard drives. All the project/song files are on the 2nd drive. I did a clean install of Vista 64 on the primary drive. Clean installs wipe out everything on that drive as I understand it. I installed in this order, Vista 64, Cubase 64, loaded EZ drummer from the original DVD then did the upgrade for 32 bit, then 64 bit. Loaded the Nashville and Latin Percussion from the original DVD then did those upgrades, the SD2 from the original DVDs, then the upgrades to SD2 to 64 bit.
The only program I had a problem with was the EZD. The SD2 appears to be working fine. Unless there are some remnants somewhere.
Should I not be loading the grooves thru the instrument track? Also I let everything load to the default settings. The .dll’s for EZD and SD2 are showing in VSt directory on Cubase.
Thanx

Can you just confirm that ezdrummer doesn’t have the 32 bit icon?

I wouldn’t have used the original DVD:s for the EZdrummer products, since they were printed before 64-bit OS:s were around to be supported.
You have full download archives of them in your Toontrack account. Installing from them and then applying the latest updates would be best.
I’m not saying that it is why you are experiencing problems now but it could be a contributing part.

OK, I will try that. Are there any other files that need to be manually removed after using the uninstall function? I thought I read somewhere on this forum about remnant files or maybe registry entries that need to be removed as well.
Thanx everybody for their help with this problem.
