Hello Toontrackers
just bought the “Made Of Metal” EZX2 and while I was playing e-drums with the first “Black On Blue”-preset I thought that something was annoying with the bassdrum sound at lower velocities: there is a kind of creaking after the main attack. When I’m playing harder the creaking is gone and the kick sounds ok. (I’m monitoring with an AKG K-271 HP and a LakePeople G100 PhoneAmp)
So I turned off Humanizing in EzDr2 and checked the samples of the 22×24″ DW Deep Blue Oyster (which turned out that among the kick-drums of MOM it is the most faulty or buggy one… – and on top of that it is the first or default kick of MOM) over the velocity range. The result is quite shocking because there are many many bad sounding samples with the impression of a double attack: after the first main attack there is a second one coming from whatever noise.
Can you please tell me the reason why such samples find the way to the Dvd? Don’t the makers of MOM listen to their samples and quality check them?? (And don’t you at Toontrack??) The first impression for me is slovenly work when making the kick samples of that drum.
Here is the result with details. I also turned off Ambience and Overhead channels when detecting this:
22×24″ DW Deep Blue Oyster
MidiVel 05 – 13 : very bad (triple stroke or something)
MidiVel 14 – 22 : bad
MidiVel 23 – 27 : OK!
MidiVel 28 – 32 : bad
MidiVel 33 – 41 : between bad and OK
MidiVel 42 – 50 : bad (creaky!)
MidiVel 51 – 60 : bad
MidiVel 61 – 63 : between bad and OK
MidiVel 64 – 66 : OK!!
MidiVel 67 – 69 : bad (creaky!)
MidiVel 70 – 74 : OK
MidiVel 75 – 79 : bad (creaky!)
MidiVel 80 – 82 : OK!!
MidiVel 83 – 85 : bad (creaky!)
MidiVel 86 – 88 : bad (creaky!)
MidiVel 89 – 93 : between bad and OK
MidiVel 94 – 97 : between bad and OK
MidiVel 98 – 127 : OK!! (there are of course several samples within this range!)
Also some other bassdrums partially sound buggy: (example: 20×24″ DW Deep Blue Selfie – MidiVel 42 – 50 : bad (creaky!))
And some are really ok over the whole velocity range: the 24×22″ Truth and the 22×24″ Mapex – I cannot find those creaky samples here.
