Logic mapping of notes in the piano roll when drag and drop SD3 drum pattern

Is there a way to tell Logic (or SD3) where to place the notes and articulations (map them) on the piano roll? I took an 8 bar pattern from SD3 and modified the articulations of the snare and hat with the Grid Editor inside SD3. Then I dragged and dropped the pattern into Logic. When I look at the piano roll in LogicI see that the drum sounds are mapped all over the piano roll. For example, some articulations are on the note F8, while others are on C-1, D4, etc. The main pattern, (kick snare hat) are on the usual notes on the piano roll but the articulations are all over the place. I would like to be able to tweak the patterns in the piano roll but it is hard to get an overview of the notes when they are spread out so much.

You can change the MIDI mapping in SD3 in the settings. I believe there is also a setting within Logic to show only notes that have MIDI data in either the Piano Roll or the Step Editor (formerly known as the HyperEditor).

Thanks for your response to my question. I was able to map the articulations to where I find them more intuitive for me. In particular, I moved the off-center snare hit to C#1, one step below the D1 where the snare-center hit is – nice.

Glad you got it going. You might, however, want to take care with changing articulations within the General MIDI spec as you might find that MIDI that you import from 3rd party libraries may not sound as you expect. In your example, you mapped a snare articulation to C#1, which is normally mapped to the sidestick.

As mentioned, if you are simply wanting to display only the notes being used in a region within the piano roll in Logic, hitting the collapse button in the piano roll will do just that. Therefore, you don’t need to to alter the drum map.

Hi Jord, that’s a good point about not changing the articulations around too much. I think your suggestion of using the collapse button on the Logic piano roll will do the job for me. Once the piano roll is collapsed I can see all the articulations in one glance. To get the off-center snare articulation in view I just added one note to the piano roll for that articulation. Thanks for your help with this workflow option.
