Within the Legacy Of Rock SDX, the Mono Ambience channel sounds heavily compressed to my ears (which I like at lot!). Is there any information available about how this was achieved? According to the mic / channel documentation on the LoR web site the Mono Ambience signal was recorded with an AEA RC44C ribbon mic through a Neve preamp an a Neve EQ. This signal chain alone would normally not introduce the kind of punchy compression that can be heard in the library.
I tried to reproduce this kind of punchy compression sound on other ambience channels with the help of the stock SD3 compression effect, but could not quite succeed. Am I missing something?
It sounds rather characteristic of in 1176 slamming the audio with a moderate attack. Short of telling you that you may have to do this by ear, you would probably have to route this into a DAW and use one of the more faithful emulations (such as UAD) to achieve the same results. It might not hurt to follow it up with a good tape emulation to give it a little bit of a push while clamping the mids.
I wouldn’t be surprised if EK used this channel in parallel with the other ambient channels to give the drums that extra drive.
