Hi

I would like to use the Logic MIDI environment to try creating a mapped instrument for SD3 (so I can rename the piano roll).

Is there a list somewhere of the assignment of keys to the various samples? And is that assignment consistent across different presets/kits in the default version of SD3?

MIDI mapping for installed libraries are found in the Help–About Sound Libraries–MIDI Layout in S3.

The default mapping is as consistent as can be given the difference in kit pieces and articulations.

It might be also worth noting that the MIDI mapping would also depend on which drum mapping you use. MIDI notes will vary with mappings such as the Logic Drum Designer mapping (if you plan to also use SD3 in collaboration with Logic’s Drummer tracks).

Also note that using the mapped instrument from Logic’s environment may require you to use that object on the arrange track and wire it into the instrument channel. It’s rather old tech at this time (3 decades), which I hope they update.

Totally agree – the environment looks like it hasn’t been touched by the developers for a long, long time.

Actually it doesn’t. You are actually doing things a little more complicated rather than putting a midi region on a drummer track with SD3 as the software instrument. Midi regions will show the mapped instrument information saving you a ton of manual entry. Plus you won’t have to do any type of wiring. It’s simply load and go. Not to mention, you can mix it with Drummer’s own regions, which I find are huge timesavers when it comes to songwriting because of their versatility.

Does Drummer’s mapping match that of SD3?

As I stated above, SD3 can map to Drummer using the Logic Drum Designer mapping.
